PRESS RELEASE (11-01-2022)
TOWN OF FRANKLIN

Franklin’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration takes place on Friday, November 11, at the Town Square beginning with a parade at 10:30 a.m. and concludes with the Veterans ceremony at 11:00 a.m.

The Veterans Day event is a long-time tradition in Franklin and is sponsored by the Town, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. All veterans are welcome to be a part of the remembrance whether a member of the community or visiting the area.

Lineup for the parade begins at 10:00 a.m. in the lower-level parking area of Town Hall. The parade will travel from Town Hall to the Gazebo on the Square. Special banners will lead each group of Veterans along the parade route according to the war or time period of service.  Town of Franklin Mayor Jack Horton and Macon County Commissioner Gary Shields have been working together to organize this year’s event that has several changes.

“We’re excited to introduce our first Grand Marshal for the Veterans Day Parade,” said Mayor Horton. “Ray Welch, a WWII Navy Veteran, will be honored this year.” Mr. Welch who is 98 years young will be chauffeured along the parade route in a Model-T.

The parade will also feature the award-winning Franklin High School Marching Panther Regiment.

Events conclude with the Veterans ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Gazebo on the Square. This year’s ceremony will feature special music from the White Sisters, and many local dignitaries and others paying tribute to members of the armed services. The ceremony will conclude with a wreath laying ceremony, rifle salute and the playing of Taps by the Veterans of Foreign Wars/American Legion Honor Guard.

According to Commissioner Shields if the weather is an issue there is a new plan in place for such a scenario, “Much like last year, we have inclement weather from time to time that affects our parade and ceremony. This year we have the FHS Fine Arts Center reserved as a backup location for event. And should the weather be an issue, we will assemble there at 10:30 a.m. for the Veterans Day Program.”

“We encourage everyone to show their support of our Veterans as we thank them for their service and remember the sacrifices made by all our armed Forces and their families,” said Mayor Horton.

You are also encouraged to show your patriotic pride by dressing in red, white, and blue for the Veterans Day activities.
