Ice Halo at Sunset in Franklin, NC

Sunset over Franklin, NC on November 1, 2010

The Ice Halo Season has started!

The sunset over Franklin, NC last night was marked by an impressive display of a 22 degree halo reflecting off ice crystals high in the sky. On either side of the sun are Parhelia, or Sun Dogs. At the top of the 22 degree halo can be seen a faint upper tangent arc.

You can learn more about these phenomena by visiting the Ice Crystal Halo page of the Atmospheric Optics webpage.

A breathtaking halo display from Finland was shared yesterday on Space Weather.
