Local News
Macon County Emergency Managment reports an erosion-related involving what they classify as a high hazard dam in the Burnington Community on Friday. In a press release, it was reported "There is no immediate threat to properties downstream but residents in the area may notice increased turbidity and muddy water in streams north of this area leading up to the Little Tennessee River."

MACON COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Erosion around a spillway channel caused an incident with a high hazard dam in Macon County earlier today. Water flowed around the spillway piping causing impounded water from the dam to discharge into a nearby creek. The Burningtown Lakes dam is located on Daves Creek Road in northern Macon County. The lake has a surface area at normal pool of 4.34 acres. There was not a complete failure of the dam and no apparent flooding occurred in the area due to the loss of water. There is no immediate threat to properties downstream but residents in the area may notice increased turbidity and muddy water in streams north of this area leading up to the Little Tennessee River. The volume of water impounded has been reduced significantly and crews from Emergency Services and Burningtown-lotla Fire and Rescue will monitor the area throughout the weekend. A representative from the North Carolina Environmental Quality Dam Safety Program was on site this afternoon and the owner(s) are making arrangements to obtain engineering and other technical services to mitigate the problem. The dam underwent a safety inspection November 2018.

Katie Dean is running for Congress in North Carolina’s 11th District. Katie is holding a Townhall on Thursday, July 15, 6pm – 7pm at the Big Bear Shelter [E. Main St. and Little Tennessee River].
The Macon County Art Association (a not for profit member organization) is offering classes in encaustic painting on Specified Fridays from 10AM-12PM at the Uptown Gallery 30 E Main St Franklin NC. Specific class dates are Friday July 9 and 23, August 3 and 27, September 3 and 17, October 29.
