Thoughts on 2006

The events of the past few days seem to have pushed a whole year's worth of events aside, as if to say they didn't matter.

I won't cheat, and pore through my posts of 2006 to refresh my memory. I'll do that later, when I am in a reflective mood.

I think the execution of Saddam will live as the most important event of the year, despite my closeness to it in time that may obscure my view.

My view is that the display by the Islamopithecines who chanted and disrupted Saddam's attempt to say the Shahada was contemptible. I daresay that sort of scene would be gleefully repeated if the Kos Kid types got their fantasy fulfilled of putting President Bush through the same circumstances, as evidenced through their posts on Daily Kos.

These people show more empathy to a man who is responsible for the deaths of over a million people, many of them his own countrymen, women, and children; and the oppression of tens of million.

They hate the man, President George W Bush, who has liberated around 50 million souls at the cost of a few thousand lives, telling far more about the dark places of their souls than about the object of their hate. I do not agree with all his policies, but, I am glad that God has raised him up to stand in the gap.

The other event that has significance for the future is the November midterms that swayed a tenuous control of the Senate from the Republicans to an equally tenuous control of the Democratic Party...setting us up nicely for 2008.

Part and Parcel to that was the loss of Charles Taylor's Congressional seat to a man claiming to be conservative. We shall see. I think he would make a good running mate for John Edwards. I wonder what the mechanism of replacement for a Congress Critter is? Would Governor Sleasley make the call? A quick internet search revealed that a temporary appointment may be made, but only until an election could be held. Speculation on my part...

I honestly can't tell you anything else about the year that looms large, except perhaps the media blitz by Hezbollah and western media served to put Israel in Samson-like chains. There are efforts afoot to prevent the traitorous activity by "the fourth estate," whop view themselves as "citizens of the world" rather than of their homeland, or of western civilization.

The 910 Group is part of that response.

Wretchard has a superb analysis at The Belmont Club of the problem and solution already underway.

The West Carolina Report is an early phase of my response on the local and state level.

I am optimistic for 2007. Now, if we can get Heads Up America, The John Batchelor Show, and No Apologies Radio back on the air...we'd really be cooking!!!

I wish all my readers and compatriots a Happy New Year!!!

P.S. Matt Drudge just made the observation that the networks did not hesitate to show American troops get shot by snipers, and fall to the ground,,,and they muted the sound, and stopped tape just before the drop out of respect for Saddam. Yes, that is another piece of evidence for the tribunal of history.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Media Bias in Portraying Those Opposed To Zoning

There is an article in today's Asheville Citizen-Times which, to me, reflect a calculated portrayal of anti-zoning advocates as ignorant hillbillies who live in the past.
Here is an excerpt:

When Buncombe County asked residents in 1999 whether they favored countywide zoning, Beth Woody was among the majority opposed to the idea.

But now that a developer wants to put more than 100 houses above her home in Britain Cove northeast of Weaverville, she feels differently.

“I did cut my nose off to spite my face, and I guess I’m paying the price,” Woody said. “I don’t think any of us realized … what the future was going to be.”

Recent conversations with county residents indicate a growing concern about the pace of development in the county’s rural areas and some new attitudes about land use controls that may result in adoption of a countywide zoning ordinance in 2007.

There are also other portions of the article which lay more weight on the zoning side of the issue from demographic data, along with "victims" of the fact that the government cannot protect them from other people practicing their Property Rights and ruining their view of the mountains.

Fellow Property Rights Advocates: Go read the article, and start your opposition now. They have already started their Campaign For Zoning, and they have more money, resources, and they are organized.

I will let you know about organizations I am aware of who are opposed to zoning, where you can go to help keep the government off your property, and your neighbors property.

If your group is opposed to this Property Rights Grab, drop me a line in the comments of this post, or send me an email.

As Expected, The Jawas Have The Money Shot

Of Saddam Dancing With The Devil

Go check out the cellphone video at The Jawa Report. Be patient with the cerebral palsy suffering video-phone operator, and wait until the end, when the guy gets a close up of Saddam hanging by his neck.

The crowd chants, "Muhammad" some before and after Saddam is sent to await final judgment.

I've been patrolling several leftist blogs and message boards over the weekend, and my belief that we will be forced to fight another civil war in this country was only strengthened by the vitriolic hatred for Truth, Justice, and the American Way was palpable.

Leftists Resist Wealth Creation in Favor of Theft

A Dangerous Obsession

A Dangerous Obsession, Part III

A Dangerous Obsession, Part IV

Many poverty-stricken people in the Third World work harder than most Americans work but, for a number of reasons, they don't produce as much. That is why these countries are poor.

Transferring wealth from 300 million Americans and spreading it out over more than two billion people in India and China is not going to do much. But enabling more people in India or China to become more productive can help them and us -- and has.

Multinational corporations are among the biggest spreaders of greater productivity to Third World countries and they usually pay higher wages than local employers. But moral exhibitionists who are hot for the redistribution of other people's money are among the biggest critics of multinational corporations.
Mr. Sowell is right on the money, and more people should be educated about the self-destructive nature of Leftist Philosophy.

Fire at Summit Inn Kills Innkeeper

I just found this story about a fire in a local Inn, not more than 4 miles away from my place:

FRANKLIN – Rhonda Lampright woke Thursday morning to the piercing sounds of smoke alarms and screams of “get out, get out.”

She and fiancé Robert Marek of Beaufort, S.C., and six other guests were staying in rooms on the second floor at the back of the historic Summit Inn overlooking downtown Franklin.

Flames cut off any chance for escape down the staircase. Instead, the guests climbed through windows to the roof.

In the front part of the inn, owners Charles “Chuck” Poser and his wife, Nancy, were also trying to escape the fast-moving fire. Both made it outside.

Charles Poser, who authorities suspect might have been searching for the family dog, went back inside.

The father of three adult daughters never came out. On Thursday afternoon, authorities found human remains inside the collapsed structure. Nancy Poser, his wife of 32 years, is hospitalized in a unit in Augusta, Ga., with burns on 80 percent of her arms and face.
Coverage by other media:

Franklin Press

MSNBC

I checked the chamber of commerce site, and they've already taken the inn off the directory, but it's still in the Google Cache, which will available until the page is indexed again.

And the website is here, and my snapshot here, in case it, too, gets taken down. If I get out that way later on this weekend, I'll take a few shots to give you an idea of the commanding view the place had. I had featured the Inn in a science fiction story I had written back in 1997 in a fan tribute story for the centennial of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds," in which the Martians landed in modern day Franklin.

FEC Admonishes Kirk Shelmerdine For Bush Sticker in '04

I am fixing to go into a full-scale rant over this piece of retardedness. I know retardedness is not a word, but I hereby christen it for use as follows:
The State of Being accomplished by years of Insensibility to Free Speech, and the Act of Attempting to Deny Free Speech as It Applies to Politics.

Here is what set me off:

NASCAR driver is rebuked for Bush sticker

It’s no secret that NASCAR drivers skew Republican, which is fine with the Federal Election Commission, just so long as they don’t display their preferences where anyone can see them.

In a decision announced Tuesday, the FEC sent an “admonishment letter” to Kirk Shelmerdine Racing. Kirk Shelmerdine, a former pit boss for the late Dale Earnhardt, has been an unsuccessful, underfunded and undersponsored driver. He has never finished higher than 26th.

So back in 2004, in a move perhaps designed to draw some attention to his car, he placed a “Bush-Cheney ’04” decal on his rear quarter panel, which was otherwise unencumbered by advertising. Democratic activist Sydnor Thompson complained to the FEC, and the agency found that Shelmerdine “may have made an unreported independent expenditure or a prohibited corporate expenditure.”

Former commissioner Bradley Smith dissented in one of the case’s early votes and blogged about the result this week. He has written that in reference to the FEC’s $250 expenditure limit, “evidence is strong that the market value of Shelmerdine’s rear quarter panel was approximately $0, give or take $249.”

Do you want to go down this road? Then that means calling and complaining every time a Hollyrot celebrity speaks for a candidate in a public venue without declaring the value of such statement with the feds. Trust me, we can choke the system with this kind of nonsense. McCain-Feingold is unconstitutional, and I will not follow it. I will go to prison first. Such a thing is as bad as Castro imprisoning dozens of people and librarians because they stocked the wrong books on their shelves that supported Freedom of Speech, despite what these enemies of mankind say.

Former FEC Commissioner Bradley Smith will be on MSNBC at 9am and 10.30am to speak about the issue, which he covered here.

One thing these retards do not realize that as a direct result of McCain-Feingold, there is now more soft money than ever in political campaigns. And remember, when someone calls themself, or someone else bipartisan, they are a liar 99% of the time.

It has been a fantasy of mine for quite a while to have a judge threaten to hold me in contempt of court, to which I would reply, "Too late, your honor, I already hold you and your court in contempt." After which, I would expect to incarcerated, with the joy of saying those words in an open court room to sustain me the rest of my life. People have to start standing up to these Thugs in Black Robes.

Update: 9.00am...

Who Is Sydnor Thompson?

I have done further research into just who Sydnor Thompson, Jr. is, It is far worse than just being a Democratic Activist. This guy is a lawyer (50 yrs plus!), and Judge appointed by Governor Hunt to the North Carolina Court of Appeals who was defeated by Ralph A Walker in 1994. He also has written a memoir, donated to Democracy NC.
He hosted a unique fundraiser in his back yard:

Well, it's official: Politicians are entertainers. As a fund-raiser for Skip Ward, a District 5 county commission candidate, a group of five politicos were slated to participate in a backyard "Survivor" contest Thursday night at the home of Judge Sydnor Thompson. Sure, the tony Myers Park spot isn't exactly roughing it, but island-goers were still to be voted off one-by-one after a series of District 5-flavored questions. Ward says he was looking for a new twist to fund-raising.

Source: Charlotte Business Journal Sydnor's name is highlighted so you can find it easier, as it is in most of the above links.

I wonder if Sydnor is suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome? Perhaps that is why he had a conniption fit over the bumper sticker.

Tomorrow Begins Today

John Edwards is going to run again. Details below:

Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards is running for president for a second time, his campaign said Wednesday.

The former North Carolina senator plans to formally announce his candidacy Thursday from New Orleans' 9th Ward, which was hard hit by Hurricane Katrina. But his campaign got a little ahead of itself Wednesday and announced his intentions online.

"Better a day earlier than a day late," said Jennifer Palmieri, Edwards' adviser.

On the eve of the formal launch of his candidacy, Edwards visited the site of his planned announcement Wednesday for a photo opportunity. He did yard work at the home of Orelia Tyler, 54, whose house was completely gutted by Hurricane Katrina and is close to being rebuilt.

Edwards' impromptu announcement was made in the wake of President Gerald Ford's death and after his campaign accidentally launched his campaign Web site a day early, then shut it back down.

The campaign Web site's logo is "John Edwards 08" and its slogan is "Tomorrow begins today."

"This campaign is about changing America," the Web site read, listing five priorities that fit neatly with Edwards' message of economic equality: "Providing universal health care for all Americans," "Rebuilding America's middle class and eliminating poverty," and "Creating tax fairness by rewarding work, not just wealth."

President Gerald Ford 1913-2006

By now, you've undoubtedly heard that the former President has passed on to his reward.
Here is a press release by President George W Bush:

Laura and I are greatly saddened by the passing of former
President Gerald R. Ford.
President Ford was a great American who gave many
years of dedicated service to our country. On Aug. 9, 1974, after a long career
in the House of Representatives and service as vice president, he assumed the
presidency in an hour of national turmoil and division. With his quiet
integrity, commonsense and kind instincts, President Ford helped heal our land
and restore public confidence in the presidency.
The American people will
always admire Gerald Ford's devotion to duty, his personal character and the
honorable conduct of his administration. We mourn the loss of such a leader, and
our 38th president will always have a special place in our nation's memory. On
behalf of all Americans, Laura and I offer our deepest sympathies to Betty Ford
and all of President Ford's family. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them
in the hours and days ahead.

And here is a pretty good summary of his life, which is probably time-sensitive, and will be taken down soon.

Nancy D'Alesandro's Culture of Corruption
A Guest Commentary by John Armor

Most of you know her as Nancy Pelosi. When I first met my one-time neighbor, she was daughter to one Mayor of Baltimore, Tommy D’Alesandro, Jr., and sister to Tommy, III, who’d later become Mayor.

Some of the stories about her, as she prepares to become Speaker of the House, have mentioned her past, but not honestly. At most, the glowing stories refer to the Baltimore City politics she grew up in as “rough and tumble.” Politics there and then were much more than rough and tumble. They were crooked as a dog’s hind leg.

I know. I grew up there. I made my first run for public office there, in 1971. Lemme tell y’all how Baltimore politics were conducted, then.

First, it was all Democrats. The last Republican was elected to the City Council in 1943. And among the Democrats, the law of the jungle applied. The strongest won, and prospered. The weakest lost, and were destroyed.

Elections in Baltimore were run by the machines, which had a feudal relationships like barons in the Middle Ages. Strongest was the D’Alesandro machine. Second to that, but working hand and glove with it, was Jack Pollack’s machine. Pollack personally was a frugal man, never accused of taking a penny for himself. But he kept hundreds of thousands of dollars in safe deposit boxes, to be dispensed as needed. Pollack had, in his pocket, many politicians including Congressman and State Senators, plus more than a few judges.

Election day funds were called “walking around money.” Each precinct captain got a stack of money proportionate to the vote he was expected to produce. Sure, the captain would keep some for himself. But a wise captain would keep his greed within limits, and use most of his allotment to buy votes.

Was this illegal? Absolutely. Then, now, and all years in between. But that’s the politics that Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi grew up in. And what did the successful politician do in Baltimore when he, and now she, had won? Reward your friends. Punish your enemies. Start gathering the money and allies to win the next election.

Honesty or corruption had nothing to do with this process. Results were all that counted. This was displayed in the D’Alesandro family history. Tommy, Jr., was never indicted for anything. But Tommy, III, was sloppy.

He was indicted for rape as a young man. He was indicted for corruption as Mayor. Both times, the charges were dismissed when the principal witness made herself / himself scarce until the charges were dismissed. In the latter case, the witness turned up alive and well in a Las Vegas casino, after the charges against D’Alesandro were dropped. The same charges against Councilman Mimi DiPietro, had not been dismissed. When I as a candidate pointed out that DiPietro could still be tried for corruption, the D’Alesandro response was to send a compliant State’s Attorney before a compliant judge, to drop those charges also.

With a clear understanding of how her politics were developed, D’Alesandro’s actions as pending Speaker make more sense. She stood by Jack Murtha in his bid for Majority Leader, because Jack had stood by her. It was irrelevant that Murtha missed being indicted in Abscam because he decided to take his agreed-upon bribe of $50,000 later, rather than right away.

D’Alesandro/Pelosi’s background also explains her actions concerning the Chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee. She is crosswise with Jane Harman, the senior Democrat, so she dropped Harman like a hot rock. Next in line was Alcee Hastings, a loyal ally and leading member of the Congressional Black Caucus. But he’d been removed as a federal judge for taking bribes from drug dealers. She dropped Hastings the same way that the D’Alesandro machine had relied on black votes, but then turned their backs on blacks after the election.

Even something that may happen January 2nd, when the House is sworn in, may reflect D’Alesandro’s culture of corruption. According to the official results from Florida, Republican Vern Buchanan, won the 13th Congressional District by 369 votes. But D’Alesandro can use her power as Speaker to steal that election for the Democrats and install Christine Jennings as the “winner” and new Congresswoman. The Democrats did that in 1984 over a seat in Indiana. It would be in character for D’Alesandro to do that in 2007.

The more you know about a politician, the better you can predict his/her motive and actions. You now know more about Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi than most of the MSM reporters and editors either know, or dare to report. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Karl Marx Comes To Macon County

The following article comes from the
Franklin Press Online:

Moratorium on high rises passes, 5-0
By Colin McCandless, Staff writer

The Macon County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution at Monday's continuation meeting to enact a moratorium on the issuance of building permits for high-rise construction in the county.

Motivated by a proposed a 10-story high rise condominium off U.S. Highway 64 in Highlands, Macon County residents have packed commissioner's meetings and planning board meetings since October to voice their opposition.

Citizens have expressed concerns about a variety of issues such as fire protection and public safety, groundwater supply, property rights, traffic congestion and the high rise structures' threat to the sense of place and quality of life in the area.

The discussion

County planner Stacy Guffey presented the moratorium ordinance to commissioners after the public hearing concluded and explained the reasoning behind the configuration of the document.

Guffey said that in 2005 the North Carolina legislature adopted new rules for issuing a moratorium.

"These rules require that we explain in greater detail the purpose of the moratorium," Guffey said.

He outlined specific points counties must address in an ordinance before moving forward with a moratorium.

Guffey said the county had to devise a clear statement of problems and conditions that necessitate the moratorium and list alternatives to the moratorium considered by the county such as not addressing the issue - not an option in this case.

'Macon County has not had the opportunity to discuss more extensive controls on this type of development and which ones may be appropriate for this type of development," Guffey said.

The legislation asks for a clear statement of the development approval subject to the moratorium and Guffey said they had achieved this step through the building permit process.

They also had to establish a date for the termination of the moratorium.

At the recommendation of the Institute of Government, Guffey said they decided to lengthen the time limit for the high-rise moratorium from the standard six months to11 months. Thus it will expire Nov. 18, 2007.

"It's always better to come out a little bit ahead than having to go back and do another public hearing if we don't have controls in place at that time," Guffey said.

Lastly, the county must provide a clear statement of the actions and schedule for those actions.

Guffey said that planning staff and the county attorney Lesley Moxley would conduct research on the potential effects of high rise buildings and potential controls for them appropriate to Macon County.

"Then I would ask permission to take it to the planning board and let them make comments on it before bringing it back to you (commissioners) for consideration," Guffey said.

Guffey said another focus of his and Moxley's work had been to strengthen the language of the moratorium document. He said they added definitions for words such as "foundation" and "story" at the request of chief building inspector Jack Morgan who said that would be important to his staff.

Guffey asked commissioners whether they had any questions about the moratorium ordinance,

Commissioner Brian McClellan asked for a point of clarification on an ordinance statistic from the U.S. Census that described the growth rate in Macon County as "continuing at around 30 percent."

Guffey said the data derived from the 1990-2000 U.S. Census statistics and the growth rate had continued at approximately 30 percent.

McClellan said he thought the reference needed its specific time frame included and was worried that the language used with the statistic- "continuing at around 30 percent" might lessen the accuracy of the statement and allow the developer to dispute an error in the county's fact gathering.

"I'd just hate for someone to take us to court and say 'well, you said it was 30 and no it's not-it's 25,' so that invalidates it.

"Thirty percent is meaningless without being founded by something," McClellan said.

Leatherman asked Moxley about the best way to phrase the statement to substantiate the growth rate statistic.

Moxley recommended they amend the statement to read: "Whereas the growth rate in Macon County according to the U.S. Census between 1990-2000 was around 30 percent."

Commissioner Bob Simpson, who made the initial motion on the moratorium, then agreed to amend his motion to reflect the ordinance changes.

Town Alderman Bob Scott had asked the commissioners during the public hearing if the moratorium would affect the municipalities.

The response was postponed until commissioners entered discussion on the moratorium, at which time Moxley explained the procedure.

"It's not effective within any municipality or within any municipalities' ETJ," Moxley said. However, a municipality may elect to adopt the ordinance if they choose to do so and they would have to do it in accordance with the general statutes, but no, this is not going to be effective within the Town of Franklin or its ETJ."

Scott said he would bring the moratorium to the town board for consideration.

Commissioner Davis asked Guffey if the developer of the proposed 10-story tower had been in touch with him to discuss the additional burden on infrastructure.

Guffey said that the developer had spoken with chief building inspector Jack Morgan but not him personally.

Davis then mentioned fire protection issues related to the high rise and the millions it would cost the Highlands Fire Department to update their equipment.

Guffey said he did have a discussion with Warrren Cabe, Director of Emergency Services. Cabe verified that they would need to purchase new equipment to service the top floors of a 10-story high rise in the event of a fire, which would cost millions to procure.

Guffey said Cabe informed him that even the new equipment would still fail to reach the 10th floor.

Ronnie Beale inquired:"Mr. Guffey, assuming passage - is it your feeling that this would become part of the High Impact Ordinance we already have now?'

Guffey said that he would rely on the county attorney to advise the board on that particular action.

"We did not address residential issues in the High Impact Ordinance and I don't know if that's a legal issue or not," Guffey said.

Moxley replied that the statutes allowed for either a stand-alone ordinance or, if deemed appropriate, to consider amending the High Impact Ordinance.

"Until we get into it, we really won't be able to tell you whether it's appropriate or not."

Public hearing speakers

Before the hearing began, Chairman Leatherman asked for a show of hands from audience members to indicate those who were in favor of the moratorium. Everyone in the full board room raised their arms.

People were given three minutes each to address the board but most speakers just chose to confirm their support for the moratorium, as Leatherman suggested at the hearing's start in the interest of time.

Leatherman acknowledged his own support for the moratorium as well.

Bob Kieltyka, who serves on the board of directors of the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, said their mission is to promote the responsible residential development of the town of Highlands and its surroundings.

"Developers should know and understand our communities and what motivates the people that visit here and choose to reside here," Kieltyka said.

"In many cases what works elsewhere neither works in this area nor is it wanted. High rise construction is neither the image we want in Highlands, nor do we want this in the adjacent areas," Kieltyka said.

Kieltyka recommended that the moratorium restrict buildings over 35 feet.

Resident Luther Turner, who commented that his family settled in Macon County in the 1830s, said the area had always been characterized by low-profile buildings and it should remain that way, reiterating Kieltyka's suggestion of prohibiting buildings over 35 feet or three stories.

Commentary

This is a clear case in usurpation of private property rights, where people who do not own a piece of property tell the person, or persons, who do own the property what to do with it. What these people in favor of this moratorium are doing smells suspiciously like what Marxists all across the world are trying to do in the interest of "sustainable development."

Sustainable Development Equals UN Agenda 21 Equals Marxism.

Some of you might think this is a Leap in Logic, so I refer you to North Carolina 20/20
Report of The North Carolina Progress Board of December, 2001. There are parts of this report that refer to land use (code for zoning) development:

1.) Land Use Plans. All local governments will have and use plans incorporating growth
management strategies, development monitoring measures, and natural resource
conservation policies. Growth is directed to areas with existing infrastructure, including
transportation, and water and wastewater systems. Currently 79 counties have land use
plans.
I believe the good people of Macon County have been tricked into allowing County-Wide Zoning via the Back Door. No doubt some of those people tricked were conservatives who proved themselves to be useful idiots for the "progressive" cause of establishing government control of every aspect of our lives, to wit:

"The idea that government doesn't grant rights is offensive to those who wish to control our lives. Therefore, to gain greater control, the idea of natural rights, God-given rights and Christian values must be suppressed. The idea that rights precede government was John Locke's natural law philosophy, which had a significant influence on our nation's founders, but they chose to refer to natural law as rights endowed by the Creator. The attack on Christian ideas and Christian public displays is part and parcel of the Leftist control agenda in another way. Certain components of the Leftist agenda require that our primary allegiance be with government. As such, there must be an attack on allegiances to the teachings of the church and family. After all, for example, if you want popular acceptance of homosexual marriages, there must be a campaign against church teachings that condemn such practices. Emboldened by their successes in the courts and intimidation of public officials, Leftists will no doubt make other demands; there's no logical end point except complete Christian capitulation. There are Christian symbols and exhibits in many Washington, DC, government buildings that will come down, such as: Moses with the Ten Commandments inside the U.S. Supreme Court, George Washington praying in the Capitol Building, Abraham Lincoln's speech mentioning God carved inside the Lincoln Memorial. Religious programming on the radio and television will come under attack. After all, there's Federal Communications Commission permission to use the 'public airwaves.' If Leftists say they have no such intention to go after television, radio and other public expressions of Christianity, what they really mean is that they haven't softened us up enough yet. I'm not quite sure of just how we should respond to the ongoing attack on Christianity and American values, but we'd better do something quickly." - Dr. Walter Williams

This took far longer than it should have, but I cleaned it up the best I could.

I downloaded an interview Kofi did with UN Radio here, and excerpted a couple of his remarks, and answered him to the best of my ability in my first self-produced podcast.

I hope you enjoy it, and I would appreciate constructive criticism, and hope to cut down on the production time, which took about four hours from conception to upload. (That's 30 minutes per minute of broadcast time..Sheesh!!!

before an election, a panel of federal judges ruled yesterday in the first
major dent in the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law.

Under that law, ads that interest groups ran 60 days before an election
or 30 days before a primary were assumed to be aimed at influencing
voters if they mentioned a candidate for federal office.

But in a 2-1 ruling, the panel yesterday said three ads from Wisconsin
Right to Life (WRTL) in 2004 were issue ads rather than election ads
and cannot be banned outright. The panel said permitting such ads should
be decided based on the individual content...

Bill Clinton First Pardoned Felon To Serve As President

The following was found in my inbox this moring, and I thought I would pass it along.

Thought you would enjoy reading this...

Bill Clinton classified 2-S on November 17, 1964.

Bill Clinton refuses to report and is not inducted into the military.

Bill Clinton reclassified 1-D after enlisting in the United States ArmyReserves on August 07, 1969, under authority of Col. E. Holmes.Clinton signs enlistment papers and takes oath of enlistment.

Bill Clinton fails to report to his duty station at the University of Arkansas ROTC, September 1969.

Bill Clinton receives pardon on January 21, 1977, from President Carter.

Bill Clinton FIRST PARDONED FEDERAL FELON ever to serve as President ofthe United States.

All these facts come from Freedom of Information requests, public laws, and various books that have been published, and have not been refuted byClinton.

After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, President Clinton promisedthat those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1995 bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed five U.S. militarypersonnel Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted downand punished.

After the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19and injured 200 U.S. military personnel; Clinton promised that thoseresponsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 andinjured 5,000; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunteddown and punished.

After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39U.S. sailors; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunteddown and punished.

Maybe if Clinton had kept those promises, an estimated 3,000 people inNew York and Washington, DC that are now dead would be alive today.

AN INTERESTING QUESTION:This question was raised on a Philly radio call-in show.

Without castingstones, it is a legitimate question:

There are two men, both extremely wealthy. One develops relatively cheapsoftware and gives billions of dollars to charity. The other sponsors terrorism. That being the case, why was it that theClinton Administration spent more money chasing down Bill Gates over the eight years in office, than Osama bin Laden?

Creed of the Anti-Jihadists

Every Movement needs a Creed to set itself apart from the rabble. I found this at The Politics of CP this morning:

Anti-Jihadist Creed

I am a citizen-soldier in a new war
Here to defend my land, my people, my heart, my mind, my faith, my civilization.
I am a defender of Truth –
At times, before men;
At times, in secret struggle
Allied with a coalition of the willing.

I am a revolutionary engaged in an information war –
A counter-propagandist, counter-jihadist, et contra tyrannum.
I will not be deceived;
I will not bow down to oppression
Or be bested by those who hate freedom.

I will not be subjugated by the enemy,
For I will not submit.
Dhimmitude is not my future.
I will not renounce my faith nor yield my culture to the evil ones,
But I will fight them in its defense
Until they are defeated.

I will use my intellect to defeat falsehood and disrupt the enemy,
Remaining vigilant in the face of subterfuge.
I will not be part of a culture of death,
But will fight for life and liberty.
For I am a warrior against Evil
Charged to spread Truth until the end of days
Aspiring to the glorious hope that awaits
When good will prevail.

My fate is thus entrusted to a Faith held dear,
By which I gather strength
For, in the end, should harm or martyrdom befall me --
I will not desert the cause.
I will fight the good fight
And look to the path of those who have gone before.

Another Lie of the Left Exposed:

Illegal Aliens Take Jobs Americans Won't Do

You remember hearing that Illegal Aliens take jobs that Americans won't take?

Well, that is a lie. They take jobs for wages that Americans won't, thereby depressing the wages for everyone else (the people here legally, that is), and they commit serious crimes in this country, crimes for which you or me would spend time in prison for, like Identity Theft, Social Security Fraud, Tax Evasion just to name a few.

There is a long line of people wanting the jobs recently vacated by Illegal Aliens captured in a series of raids at meat packing plants owned by Swift & Co in the heartland of America:

Applicants line up to fill jobs left empty by Swift plant raid

GREELEY - The line of applicants hoping to fill jobs vacated by undocumented workers taken away by immigration agents at the Swift & Co. meat-processing plant earlier this week was out the door Thursday.

Among them was Derrick Stegall, who carefully filled out paperwork he hoped would get him an interview and eventually land him a job as a slaughterer. Two of his friends had been taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and he felt compelled to fill their rubber boots.

"Luckily, they had no wives or family they left behind. But it was still sad. They left their apartments filled with all their stuff. I took two dogs one of them had. The other guy had a cat I gave to my sister," he said.

Greg Bonifacio heard about the job openings on television and brought his passport, his Colorado driver's license, his Social Security card and even a color photograph of himself as a young Naval officer to prove his military service.

"I don't want to hassle with any identification problems because of my last name," said Bonifacio, a 59- year-old Thornton resident of Filipino heritage.

As it turned out, the Colorado Workforce office that was taking applications did not require any identification.

That would come later for those who made it past the interview process.

Commentary

The event that radicalized me as far as energizing me to fight back, and change things was the "Day Without Immigrants" earlier this spring. When I became aware that there were millions ready to take to the streets in support of the subversion of America, I decided to do something about it.

I am not done yet, and I have a plan...

Things Are Coming To A Head in Iraq

Victor Davis Hanson has another essay out on the Iraqi Theater of WW IV, an excerpt of which is below:

Why then has the United States become unhinged?

A variety of reasons.

A media that makes Cindy Sheehan, Valerie Plame, Mark Foley’s email, or lies about flushed Korans in Guantanamo into headline stories is itself nearly lunatic.

The once quick victories in Afghanistan (8 weeks) and Iraq (3 weeks), following the easy wins over Noriega and Milosevic, unrealistically sent the message that the United States could almost simultaneously win wars without losses and continue to honor its global obligations with a vastly reduced Army and Marines.

And the problem in Iraq has not been so much the constant “mistakes” (such lapses happen in every war), as the inability of our government to articulate why we are there and how we will win.

The result is that we have almost worked ourselves into some sort of self-induced paralytic state. But on sober reflection, things in fact are hardly lost. There has been no repeat of 9/11. The U.S. military has killed thousands of jihadists. The Taliban and Saddam are gone. There are still democratic governments in Afghanistan and Iraq struggling to make it, the first in the history of the region. Our troops in the field have high morale and believe they can secure Iraq. And the world, especially in Europe, has become vigilant against Islamic fundamentalism.

We are in much better shape that during any of the crises that Churchill, Roosevelt, or Truman all weathered. And while 50 dead every month since 9/11 is a high toll in this war against jihadism, it does not compare to the 8,000 plus killed from December 1941 to August 1945, a war that similarly started out with a surprise, though less lethal attack on the United states.

TIME Magazine Person of the Year Named

Due to a clerical error, TIME Magazine shipped with the wrong cover, and this is the intended original cover.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist hamming it up!!! Now, on to the "real story."

NEW YORK (AP) - Congratulations! You are the Time magazine "Person of the Year."

The annual honor for 2006 went to each and every one of us, as Time cited the shift from institutions to individuals - citizens of the new digital democracy, as the magazine put it. The winners this year were anyone using or creating content on the World Wide Web.

"If you choose an individual, you have to justify how that person affected millions of people," said Richard Stengel, who took over as Time's managing editor earlier this year. "But if you choose millions of people, you don't have to justify it to anyone."

The magazine did cite 26 "People Who Mattered," from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il to Pope Benedict XVI to the troika of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

And Stengel said if the magazine had decided to go with an individual, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the likely choice. "It just felt to me a little off selecting him," Stengel said.

The 2006 "Person of the Year" package hits newsstands Monday. The cover shows a white keyboard with a mirror for a computer screen where buyers can see their reflection.

Prosecutorial Misconduct

I found a link to this story on Drudge. The Duke Lacrosse Case has been noticed, but not commented upon me because I have found the whole sordid affair distasteful. Recent events have brought it home to me that what a D.A. does in Durham, N.C. does concern me in West Carolina, and I am correcting that mistake now:

The head of a private DNA laboratory said under oath today that he and District Attorney Mike Nifong agreed not to report DNA results favorable to Duke lacrosse players charged with rape.

Brian Meehan, director of DNA Security of Burlington, said his lab found DNA from unidentified men in the underwear, pubic hair and rectum of the woman who said she was gang-raped at a lacrosse party in March. Nurses at Duke Hospital collected the samples a few hours after the alleged assault. Meehan said the DNA did not come from Reade Seligmann, David Evans, or Collin Finnerty, who have been charged with rape and sexual assault in the case.

Meehan struggled to say why he didn’t include the favorable evidence in a report dated May 12, almost a month after Seligmann and Finnerty had been indicted. He cited concerns about the privacy of the lacrosse players, his discussions at several meetings with Nifong, and the fact that he didn’t know whose DNA it was.

Under questioning by Jim Cooney, a defense attorney for Seligmann, Meehan admitted that his report violated his laboratory’s standards by not reporting results of all tests.

Did Nifong and his investigators know the results of all the DNA tests? Cooney asked. More here

I am beginning to seriously believe that the problem with this case, like others I am cognizant of, is the District Attorney. My belief is that in these cases, the D.A. should be looked at very closely. I think this guy has a skeleton or two in his closet. Just a hunch, like other D.A.s have skeletons.

May 1 2006 — Accused Duke lacrosse player Reade Seligmann's attorneys want Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong thrown off the case. Today, they filed a legal motion specifically asking for it.

"DA Mike Nifong neglected his duty as a prosecutor to seek the truth and a fair prosecution," the defense's motion reads.

Six motions and four affidavits were filed just 24 hours before Nifong's Tuesday election in which he's fighting to keep his seat. Nifong is being challenged by former prosecutor Freda Black and private lawyer Keith Bishop. Any candidate needs 40 percent plus one vote to win the election. If Nifong loses the election, he could be out of office before the rape trial begins.

The motion argues that the election has affected Nifong's approach to the case and accuses him of using the Duke investigation to his political advantage.

"He [Nifong] created a conflict between his professional duties and the search for truth, and his personal vested interest in getting elected," the motion says. Read the rest.

Beginnings...

A life-long resident of North Carolina, District Attorney Mike Nifong was born in Wilmington, where he graduated from New Hanover High School. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Herbert W. Jackson scholarship, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with an A.B. degree in Political Science in 1971.

Although he had decided on an eventual career in law while still in high school, Nifong worked for his first year after graduation from UNC as a teacher of mathematics and boys’ physical education in Southport. This was followed by a three-year stint as a social worker with the New Hanover County Department of Social Services in Wilmington before he finally enrolled in the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1975. Dissing Dr. King's Dream in Durham an article in The Conservative Voice.

Then, the blogs...

In more than 60 public statements, Durham DA Mike Nifong has tried to spin facts, including DNA results, to support his charge that some Duke lacrosse players are guilty of raping a woman.

Below are the headlines and first three paragraphs of three newspapers' reports today of results of a second round of DNA testing of Duke lacrosse players.

Read the following headlines and paragraphs. See if you can't pick out which headline and paragraph are closest to DA Nifong type spin. Click here to see them.

John in North Carolina has another, devastating post, and links to another.

Commentary
Seeing the noose tighten around Nifong gives me hope that justice will come to others as well. I believe the light should shine brightly upon Nifong. His photograph should be shared far and wide, and should be synonymous with Prosecutorial Misconduct, along with others.

The Problem With The War

The Gathering Storm has an interesting series of links and analysis about this war we can't even name yet. I vote for World War IV...

Superhero Politics and The Coming Genocide

I found an entertaining post on Superhero Politics via The Freedom Folks blog. Check them both out, and especially the Freedom Folks post on the bomb threats against Tom Tancredo, further proof that the Miami area has degenerated into third world status.

Now, to the Main Course, a post from The Gates of Vienna :

Coupled with Iran’s repeated assertions that Israel should be wiped off the map - evidently as long as one Jew remains, the 12th Imam can’t come up for air - the highly publicized Holocaust Denial Conference in Tehran is evidence enough for charges of genocide against Iran.

Let me see, David Duke agrees with President Whacko of Iran, there was no Holocaust. It's a wonder the 9/11 Conspiracy Theorists didn't attend the "conference" as well.

Where are all the nuts coming from?

Mitt Romney and Mormonism

I found an interesting video that is more about Mormonism than Mitt Romney, and uses his potential candidacy for President as a springboard to discuss Mormon Doctrine.

It is about 33 minutes long, so don't say you weren't warned!

Commentary

Food for thought. Consider the vetting process for all candidates underway.

More Proof Senator McCain Has Lost His Ever Loving Mind

*update* Millions of commercial Web sites and personal blogs would be required to report illegal images or videos posted by their users or pay fines of up to $300,000, if a new proposal in the U.S. Senate came into law.

The legislation, drafted by Sen. John McCain and obtained by CNET News.com, would also require Web sites that offer user profiles to delete pages posted by sex offenders.

In a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, the Arizona Republican and former presidential candidate warned that "technology has contributed to the greater distribution and availability, and, some believe, desire for child pornography." McCain scored 31 of 100 points on a News.com 2006 election guide scoring technology-related votes.

After child pornography or some forms of "obscenity" are found and reported, the Web site must retain any "information relating to the facts or circumstances" of the incident for at least six months. Webmasters would be immune from civil and criminal liability if they followed the specified procedures exactly.

McCain's proposal, called the "Stop the Online Exploitation of Our Children Act" (click for PDF), requires that reports be submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which in turn will forward them to the relevant police agency. (The organization received $32.6 million in tax dollars in 2005, according to its financial disclosure documents.)

Internet service providers already must follow those reporting requirements. But McCain's proposal is liable to be controversial because it levies the same regulatory scheme--and even stiffer penalties--on even individual bloggers who offer discussion areas on their Web sites.

"I am concerned that there is a slippery slope here," said Kevin Bankston, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. "Once you start creating categories of industries that must report suspicious or criminal behavior, when does that stop?"

Commentary

Senator John McCain is evil and must be voted out of office at the earliest opportunity. And if Arizona Republicans don't have sense enough to elect someone else, I may just have to pony up some money for his Democratic challenger.

I tell you now, with the Google Cache as my witness, if McCain becomes the Republican nominee, I'll donate money to his Democratic opponent, I'll even man the phones at the nearest Moveon.org phonebank at least once during the campaign...unless that person has supported this piece of legislation. Seeds of Intellectual Destruction

I first posted this at my Alpha Site (Nod to Stargate Atlantis).

I hope this is not how the people at blogger intend to move everyone over to the beta site. I use three columns on my original site, Thunder Pig, and beta does not support three columns. Ok, enough whining. Time to post.

I found an interesting article on The American Thinker called "Seeds of Intellectual Destruction'" by J.R. Dunn.

Here are some interesting tidbits:

It's always amazed me how quickly the American left managed to twist the 9/11 attacks into a club with which to beat their own country. I recall watching the smoke from the towers late in the day, exhausted from stress and emotions I could scarcely identify, and thinking, "They'll never be able to defile this." It was the end of the postwar flirtation with apostasy, I thought, the end of political frivolity, the birth of a new kind of patriotism, one annealed by fire, one that would become part of framework of the country, one that would last.

Well - they proved me wrong. True, for a few days they kept quiet, scattering like roaches when caught in the public spotlight mouthing the old slogans. Michael Moore was forced to back up quickly after his first remarks, and there was that aide to Willie Brown ("What did you do, America?") never heard of before or since, and of course, Noam Chomsky, pleading that we "enter the minds" of Mohammed Atta and company, but apart from that, most of them kept their counsel. For a while, it really seemed that things had changed.

But after what in retrospect appears to be a pitifully short period, they were back, and in force, and they have never retreated since. Contrary to consensus belief, it didn't begin with Iraq. It began with Afghanistan, starting only a month after the attacks, and built up from there. Moore, the Dixie Chicks, Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia McKinney, Durbin, Murtha... The list could go on for page after page, all of them speaking in identical terms, all repeating the same code words - Halliburton, blood for oil, Abu Ghraib - all tearing into their country in a fashion unseen even in the Vietnam era.

And where the trendsetters have led, the public has followed. If the polls can be trusted (a bit of a leap, it's true) something like over half the American people believe that the War on Terror, far from being a response to an unprovoked and atrocious attack, is a war of aggression fought on behalf on industrial capitalism in the form of George W's oil buddies.

This is not a natural response. Countries fighting legitimate defensive wars don't suffer this kind of erosion of public support in the midst of hostilities. Particularly as involves a war that began with an atrocity committed against fellow countrymen, an atrocity that could be (and eventually will be) repeated at any time. Such a reaction should not have occurred.

The reason it happened this time was the result of fifty years of conditioning that any and all American activities overseas, whether diplomatic, commercial, or military, are fundamentally illegitimate. American wars, no matter what their cause or nature, are viewed through the same prism, one created on the left for the purpose of undermining the country's commitment to the Cold War, but useful in any context. Call it the "Imperial" or "Hegemonist" doctrine. Simply put, it holds that no American war (and little in the way of any interaction on the international level) is ever justified. All such ventures are wars of imperialist aggression, commonly carried out against helpless innocents in defiance of the wishes of the American people (at least the true American people - that is, left-wing Democrats), on behalf of secretive, sinister interest groups.

Unlike most left-wing doctrines, this one is not a European import but fully home-grown. It was incubated in the universities, developing over several decades in response to U.S. efforts against the Soviet Union. Like any such doctrine it was the product of many hands over a considerable period. But for our purposes, two of the major figures, C. Wright Mills and William Appleman Williams, will serve as examples.

Williams was a revisionist historian based for many years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, one of the nation's premier radical campuses. His field was American diplomatic history. In works such as The Tragedy of American Diplomacy (1958) and Roots of the Modern American Empire (1969) Williams depicted the U.S. as an imperial state basing its policies on relentless economic expansion and distracting the masses with a series of overseas military adventures. The Cold War, according to this view, was instigated by the U.S. to protect its markets, with the Soviets as much victims as perpetrators. It comes as no surprise to discover that Williams is Gore Vidal's favorite historian. (Ironically, Williams was eventually driven from Madison by the activities of the very New Leftists he'd done so much to influence.)

I continue with my assertion that Leftists are the first enemy that we will have to defeat before we can meet the Islamists on the Field of Battle, and destroy them.

I will copy and paste this post back into my Primary Blog as it becomes available. Bookmark this Alpha Site as a backup for when Blogger is down. You can check on the status of blogger by going here, although it says nothing about this problem now, I feel that is due to the early hour of my blogging, I may be

Don't Mess With Texas

On December 2, I posted on a Texan, Craig Barker, who had been told by Muslims planning on building a mosque nearby, that it was time to move on. He did not take very kindly to that "proposal." He decided to start Friday Night pig racing on his property.

This morning, I found an anonymous comment directing me to American Pig Race, a website set up to tell Craig Barker's story. In the spirit of Texans past, he titles his story, "Take A Stand." I have excerpts below:

On September 29,2006 at 11:30 AM, Mr. Yousuf N. Shaikh & Mr. Kamel H. Fotough came to my office to introduce themselves to me as the new neighbors. These two gentlemen informed me that they had purchased the adjacent house along with the 11-acre tract of land from the Sacco family on 09/22/06. They asked that I remove my cattle from this 11-acre tract & remove my electrical fence. They said they were going to use the existing house as a community center. Children would be coming to play on the grounds, and as an engineer, Mr. Fotough felt it was unsafe for them to be around the cattle. Since 1995 I had been leasing this property from the Sacco’s to run my Limousine cattle on.

The gentlemen were very friendly, but spoke with a heavy Middle Eastern accent. They told me how much they loved the United States & how they had such big plans for the land. They said that their children had grown up right here in America, and they said that their ultimate dream is to build a parking lot, a new community center, an athletic facility, a school, and a mosque. They felt that they were going to need a total of 25 acres to complete this project, which might take them as long as five years to complete. They went into great detail how they wanted to provide a complete atmosphere where their friends could bring their entire families to worship & to play, and they said they would even provide security for the entire site. They felt that there was no other place on the far west side of Houston that was able to handle their needs.

While I was walking these men out, I offered to give them some granite fill, free of charge for their new driveway that they had planned. Then Mr. Fotough said that it was probably a good idea for me to start thinking about packing up my business, along with my family and moving somewhere further out in the country. They felt that a mosque and a marble shop did not go well together. He told me he was from Egypt and his partner was from Pakistan, and that they were bringing many new families in from as far as 5,000 miles away. He went on to say that many of these new people that they would be bringing in would be unfamiliar with many of the local customs, and/or ways of doing things, and that most would not be able to speak English at first.

Before they left, they provided me with their cell phone numbers so that if I ever had a problem I would be able to get in touch with them. I of course reciprocated the gesture, but I did not say much of anything because I was simply trying to digest what I had heard. I must have had a look of total shock on my face.

The story has progressed to the point where an attorney for the owners of the land purchased for the mosque has sent Mr. Baker a letter demanding that he remove the pigs from his property.

I guess these people have not heard the phrase, "Don't Mess with Texas!"

I suspect this is not the end of the story, and at some point, Mr. Baker will need help to counter the efforts of his neighbors to restrict his property rights.

Please put his website in your Internet Browser's Favorites, or Bookmarks Folder, or check by here periodically for further updates.

But wait, there is more, I just checked the Katy Islamic Association
website referenced in the attorney's letter. I think Mr. Baker's neighbors have weighed in to help their neighbor, and themselves. Now this is citizen activism of the type we should see all over America!

And, to top it off, the AP (Al-qaeda Post) sent a muslim woman to cover the story.
I guess the AP have not heard of the Islamic practice of lying to infidels.
Read the website, and look around in the forums, and ask your self this question, "What would you do if someone purchased property next door to you, then told you that certain things on your property offended them or their religious sensibilities? What if they suggested that you move on to another place?"
We should hope that our response would be as half as effective as Mr. Baker and his neighbors.
The next question will be, "Is the Government on our side? And if not, what are we gonna do about it?"
Who we elect is very important, and their willingness to protect private property rights.

How UN and NGO’s demonize Israel

There It couldn’t be a more perfect time

GERALD M. STEINBERG, THE JERUSALEM POST Dec. 10, 2006

Today, December 10, marks International Human Rights Day, and the presence in Israel of Irene Khan, head of Amnesty International, highlights the demise of once-lofty goals. Amnesty International is a superpower with an annual budget of almost $200 million, used to promote radical political agendas and photo-ops for its leaders.

As a result, little remains of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in the shadow of the Holocaust. Officials of Amnesty and other non-governmental organizations focus their attacks on democracies attempting to defend against terror, with far fewer resources to oppose totalitarian and genocidal regimes such as Sudan and Iran.

And this was on Maggie's Farm:

Crisis of the Week: Climate Change on Mars (with a humble and heart-felt apology to the entire Dutch Community)

We now have more evidence of global warming on Mars than we do on the earth. As the ice melts, it is causing harmful erosion, and soon the beautiful natural deserts may be under ten feet of water, thus destroying potential happy habitats for camels and Arabs. (Nice for the Dutch, though, who prefer to live in swamps, below sea level.)

There may be a risk that Martian craters, now in their pristine natural form, may fill with water and be destroyed like Crater Lake in the image. Water vapor will doubtless add to the heat-trapping of Martian warming, and erosion will release more CO2 from the soil and rocks, creating a true crisis for Martian planetary stability. An atmosphere means weather, and weather means bad weather, like Katrina.

Thus the policy of environmental destruction continues unabated under Bush. But what can we, as individuals, do to save the Martian environment from further degradation? More recycling and more car-pooling are fun places to start.

Another good idea is to have a neighborhood "Save the Martian Environment Party." Serve Mars-friendly hors doeuvres and snacks, and exchange ideas about what we all can do to save the Martian environment. Remember: No idea is wrong! It's fun, and Mars-friendly!

Meet the world's top destroyer of the environment. It is not the car, or the plane,or even George Bush: it is the cow.

A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.

The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.

Burning fuel to produce fertiliser to grow feed, to produce meat and to transport it - and clearing vegetation for grazing - produces 9 per cent of all emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. And their wind and manure emit more than one third of emissions of another, methane, which warms the world 20 times faster than carbon dioxide.

Livestock also produces more than 100 other polluting gases, including more than two-thirds of the world's emissions of ammonia, one of the main causes of acid rain.

Ranching, the report adds, is "the major driver of deforestation" worldwide, and overgrazing is turning a fifth of all pastures and ranges into desert.Cows also soak up vast amounts of water: it takes a staggering 990 litres of water to produce one litre of milk.

Wastes from feedlots and fertilisers used to grow their feed overnourish water, causing weeds to choke all other life. And the pesticides, antibiotics and hormones used to treat them get into drinking water and endanger human health.

The pollution washes down to the sea, killing coral reefs and creating "dead zones" devoid of life. One is up to 21,000sqkm, in the Gulf of Mexico, where much of the waste from US beef production is carried down the Mississippi.

The report concludes that, unless drastic changes are made, the massive damage done by livestock will more than double by 2050, as demand for meat increases.
