GENERAL OUTLOOK

A cold front will approach out of the west early this morning leading to widespread showers and thunderstorms through the early morning hours. A few storms may become strong to severe. The cold front will continue pushing east this afternoon leading to scattered shower and thunderstorm development along the front across the far southeastern fringe of the forecast area. Brief drying returns this evening into early Tuesday, before unsettled weather returns for the rest of the workweek into the weekend.

FRANKLIN -- The Women’s Guild of St. Francis Church will hold its annual Good Stuff Sale Noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 16, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the church, 299 Maple St. in Franklin. The event supports the Guild’s ministry activities. Guests can expect great prices on household and decorative objects, kitchen items, linens, books, personal accessories, toys, tools, exercise equipment, furniture, craft supplies and yard tools including indoor and outdoor plants. Franklin Amateur Radio Club to Hold Annual Field Day in Highlands

The Franklin Amateur Radio Club (HAMS) will hold its annual Field Day at the Highlands Recreation Center on Saturday, June 24, 2 PM until 6 PM. The center is located at 600 North Street and 4 th Street.

Field Day is amateur radio operators’ (hams) open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill, service to communities and nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains the most popular ham radio event.

There are 190 ham radio operators in Macon County.

Anyone, regardless of residency, is welcome at Field Day.

Amateur Radio is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Anyone interested in learning about Ham radio is welcome. Portable radio stations will be up and operational around 2 PM. Contacts will be made worldwide. As well as in North America. This year the amateur radio operators will also be demonstrating Parks On The Air and Summits On The Air.

Parks on the Air® (POTA) sites are for international portable amateur radio operations that promote emergency awareness and communications from national/federal and state/provincial level parks.

Summits on the Air (SOTA) is designed to make participation possible for all Radio Amateurs and Shortwave Listeners - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers who operate from home, a local hilltop, or other summits).

Both SOTA and POTA will have stations set up and operators to demonstrate what the hobby is about.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.

1899 – New Richmond tornado: The eighth deadliest tornado in U.S. history kills 117 people and injures around 200.
1900 – The Reichstag approves new legislation continuing Germany's naval expansion program. It provides for construction of 38 battleships over a 20-year period. Germany's fleet will be the largest in the world.
1914 – Massacre of Phocaea: Turkish irregulars slaughter 50 to 100 Greeks and expel thousands of others in an ethnic cleansing operation in the Ottoman Empire.
1921 – Mikhail Tukhachevsky orders the use of chemical weapons against the Tambov Rebellion, bringing an end to the peasant uprising.
1935 – A ceasefire is negotiated between Bolivia and Paraguay, ending the Chaco War.

1954 – Pope Pius XII canonises Dominic Savio, who was 14 years old at the time of his death, as a saint, making him at the time the youngest unmartyred saint in the Roman Catholic Church. In 2017, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, aged ten and nine at the time of their deaths, are declared saints.
1963 – NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers is murdered in front of his home in Jackson, Mississippi by Ku Klux Klan member Byron De La Beckwith during the civil rights movement.

1975 – India, Judge Jagmohanlal Sinha of the city of Allahabad ruled that India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had used corrupt practices to win her seat in the Indian Parliament, and that she should be banned from holding any public office. Mrs. Gandhi sent word that she refused to resign.
1979 – Bryan Allen wins the second Kremer prize for a man-powered flight across the English Channel in the Gossamer Albatross.
