LOCAL NEWS
The first major snowfall of the winter season fell Friday and early Saturday, with local accumulations ranging from 6 to 15 inches in most places with a few locations receiving more. Here is a graphic from the NOAA Office of Water Prediction showing the snow cover over the southern Appalachian area:
Over 7,000 Maconians lost power and utility crews from area power companies worked to restore service and answer calls with local fire and rescue services to remove power from dangerous situations like fires, accidents, and situations where lines had fallen onto residences, roadways or had started fires. Electrical services will probably be restored to most Maconians by sometime Tuesday at the latest. Here is a look at the latest numbers:

Below normal temperatures and dry conditions will persist through early next week. Very cold air and mountain snow chances will return Wednesday as another system moves through the area before another drying trend begins.

HAZARDS
Hazardous weather is expected today. The runoff from yesterday's snow melt has refrozen on area roadways, some of as “black ice” that is difficult to see. Area roads may be slippery, so please exercise caution when traveling this morning, and increase the distance you follow vehicles on the roads so you can have extra time to stop if they hit a slick spot or suddenly stop.
