The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn today, April 5, weather permitting, on the Nantahala Ranger District in the Standing Indian area near Pine Mountain in Macon County.
Park Creek Trail (TR33) and Park Ridge Trail (TR32) will be closed during the burn and are expected to reopen this afternoon. The 700-acre burn will come down to the back of the Standing Indian Campground. The campground will remain open.
The goal of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuels in the forest understory to prevent future catastrophic wildfires.
