Outlook

Cool and dry high pressure will settle across the area today and is expected to linger through Thursday. An increased chance of rain returns for the weekend and continues into early next week.

Otto Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire located at 129 American Way Drive at approximately 4pm on Monday afternoon. One occupant was located deceased inside of the structure and the name of the deceased has not been released. The investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is currently underway with the assistance from the Macon County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Macon County Sheriff’s Department and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. Otto Fire and Rescue was assisted in the extinguishment of the fire by Franklin Fire and Rescue, Clarks Chapel Fire and Rescue and Squad 4.

* WHAT...Widespread low temperatures in the mid 30s will result in frost formation.

* WHERE...The mountains and northern foothills of western North Carolina, especially in the sheltered valleys.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to 9 AM EDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize and Guatemala are associated with a tropical wave. This system is forecast to move west-northwestward and emerge over the far southwestern Gulf of Mexico by late Thursday. Some development is then possible on Friday near the east coast of Mexico before the disturbance likely becomes absorbed by a cold front this weekend.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.
