OUTLOOK

A strong winter storm will dive into the mid-south tonight and Sunday with significant impacts expected across the region before departing along the the East Coast Sunday night. Cold and breezy conditions are expected in the storms wake Monday with lingering snow showers near the Tennessee border. Temperatures will rebound to near normal mid-week ahead of our next cold front.

What to expect From this storm

The way the models are currently (4am on Saturday) handling the moisture is that we should have some snow showers in the mid-to late afternoon. You should plan on being where you want to be until Tuesday by this time. Please stay off the roads during this storm so NCDOT trucks can clear them more effectively and so emergency personnel do not have to risk their lives to save yours because you wanted to "see how pretty the snow looks." We will also be having a wind field cross the area Sunday morning, so there will probably be some power outages and power company personnel will need to access locations without having the thread their way through wrecked and abandoned vehicles. The main event is supposed to start at around 11pm or so tonight (temperature will be below freezing at around this point) and reach its peak output around 5am or so and decrease the amount of snow falling somewhat around 10am when is should turn to rain and freezing rain for a couple of hours (along with an increase in wind speeds and temperature) or so and then change back over to snow and them pick back up between 2pm through 5pm as temperatures drop back below freezing and gradually taper off into Monday morning. Temperatures probably will not rise above freezing until sometime Tuesday morning or Tuesday afternoon depending on your elevation. Locations above 3500 feet may not rise above freezing at all. Maps of snow and ice depth forecasts from the National Weather Service are included in the Hazardous Weather Section of the news and weather briefing. Be safe, be kind to one another and check up on your neighbors.

Short Range Ensemble Forecasting Computer Models

A lot of amateur forecasters often share snow cover maps they see posted online. Most of the time, they only share the maps that show the most snow and neglect to let their friends or readers know that these maps are just the ones that show the most snow instead of trying to communicate uncertainties in the forecast. Macon Media considers any forecast map for an event more than 72 hours away to be unreliable and will not share any because of this unless it is a map prepared by professionals at the National Weather Service, Local Yokel Weather or a few other trusted meteorologists. Perhaps a better tool are charts called meteograms that allow forecast uncertainty to be communicated to the public so they can manage expectations of an event. The above chart is the output of a Short Range Ensemble Forecast of comouter models by the National Weather Service for their weather station located at the Macon County Airport. The map is annotated to help you understand the information being displayed. You can click on the map to embiggen it to a larger size or download it to your device to expand it even more.

Data from the 03Z Model Run
at 11pm on 01-14-2022

Inches of snow are on the vertical axis
Time and Date are on the horizontal axis

subtract 4 from the xxZ to get the timer in 24 hour format.

In the interest of promting transparency and to communicate uncertainties in the forecast, Macon Media will try to share some of these products in the future. While it's a bit technical and not as sexy or popular for generating social media buzz or "becoming viral" as posting a clown map, it is more responsible and sober. --Bobby
