Hazards and Tropical Weather
A Flood Watch has been issued for Macon County through tomorrow afternoon. A copy of the watch, as well as a collage of graphs from local water gauges located in Macon County is posted below. The water gauge readings were captured by Macopn Media at 2am,
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory that includes Macon County.
Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in cars swept downstream. Many of these drownings are preventable. Never drive around the barriers blocking a flooded road. The road may have collapsed under that water. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

...FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 115 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON...
* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
* WHERE...Western Macon County in North Carolina.
* WHEN...Until 115 PM EST Friday.
* IMPACTS...Dangerous flows over low-water crossings.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 118 AM EST, Over the past 36 hours, persistent waves of light to moderate showers have impacted Macon County, producing widespread 2-4" of rainfall. Excessive runoff from this heavy rain has caused the Nantahala River to rise above Action/Advisory Stage, impacting low-water crossings.
Additional rainfall of up to one inch is possible through Friday morning, but this rainfall is not expected to exacerbate ongoing flooding. Nevertheless, it will take several hours for the Nantahala River to crest and recede.
- The Nantahala River has exceeded the Action/Advisory Stage of 4.0 feet and is flooding low-water crossings at Tate Cove Rd and near Water Gauge Rd and Rainbow Springs Rd and is beginning to strand residents or require lengthy detours into Clay County. The river has exceeded 5.0 feet and is expected to crest below 6.0 feet over the next several hours before receding gradually Friday morning.
- Some locations that may experience Minor flooding include... Rainbow Springs and areas near Nantahala Lake.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
