The chance of strong thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening has increased from slight to moderate with about a 40% chance of happening between noon and 8 pm. This means that between noon and 8 pm, there will be a 40% chance that a strong thunderstorm is occurring within 25 miles of any point on the map. Most computer models agree the storms should be forming and/or arriving between 4 pm and 8 pm with the greatest chance being around 5 to 6 pm. Temperatures will rise to the lower 80s in the lower elevations of Franklin, Otto, and the Nantahala areas and the upper 70s on the Highlands Plateau and the higher elevations elsewhere in the county. It will be partly sunny for most of the day, with a period of increased cloudiness from around 11am to 8 pm, then mostly cloudy for a few hours after midnight.
Hazardous Weather Outlook (9:30 am Update)
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms will become severe with damaging wind gusts and large hail. Gusty winds, cloud to ground lightning, and briefly heavy rainfall will be possible with any storm.
