Daily Weather Briefing for Thursday, August 22, 2019

Outlook (Excessive Rainfall Possible Tonight Through Friday)

A warm and humid airmass will persist across the region today as a cold front sets up to our west stretching from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic. The front will approach our region Friday, bringing periods of extended and heavy rainfall with it as it slowly moves south through the area. A cool and moist wedge of high pressure will set up behind the front on Sunday and linger through Monday. Another cold front will approach from the west during the middle of next week.

DAILY PHOTO

The "Great American Solar Eclipse" took place a year and a day ago, and the path of totality passed through Macon County. Franklin was on the northern edge of the path and here is what it looked like in Rankin Square that day at the time of maximum totality.
This watermarked image of the eclipse was taken looking at the foot of the Confederate Memorial in Rankin Square on August 21, 2017, by Bobby Coggins.

THREE DAY GFS FORECAST
This animated image shows a forecast of precipitation, air pressure and thickness level (cold-air damming) for three days in six-hour increments.

Weather Hazards

Abundant moisture will set up over the region just ahead of a cold front approaching from the north on Friday. Instability in the warm and moist air ahead of the front may contribute to locally excessive rainfall, mainly in the period between tonight and Friday afternoon. Flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas will be possible at any location affected by repeating showers and thunderstorms, and small streams could approach bankfull where heavy rain falls.

These conditions will linger into Saturday as the front only slowly moves south across the area.

**Note** A Tropical Weather Outlook section has been added to the daily weather briefing for the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and since those tend to run long when there is activity, that section has been added between the daily forecasts for the four regions of the county and the almanac section so people can get to their daily forecasts with minimal interference.
