RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Work Zone Safety Reminder

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s number one priority is safety, including for crews working. On any given day, there are hundreds of construction projects across the state.

Last week, on Interstate 40 in Iredell County, three contract workers were killed while in a construction zone. Drivers are reminded to stay alert and pay close attention to signs and crews. For more information and tips for driving in a work zone, visit ncdot.gov.

New Secretary of Transportation

The department has a new Secretary of Transportation – Eric Boyette.
Boyette comes to NCDOT after leading the Department of Information Technology for the past three years. He’s no stranger to NCDOT as he previously worked as its chief information officer and inspector general and the Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner.

Boyette enters the role after previous Secretary Jim Trogdon retired from state service with more than 30 years of experience in transportation.

Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time begins Sunday, March 8. This time of year can create problems for drivers as the sun rises and sets later in the day.
Make sure to:
  • Ensure your vehicle’s exterior and interior lights are working properly;
  • Be alert for bicyclists and pedestrians; and
  • Be well rested and avoid driving when feeling drowsy.
For more information about NCDOT Now, contact the NCDOT Communications Office at (919) 707-2660. Additional news stories from throughout the week can be found on NCDOT.gov.
