Daily Weather Briefing for 2020 Memorial Day

OUTLOOK

An upper-level ridge of high pressure will persist over the region today, while a weak back door cold front sags southward through the area. A moist wedge-like weather pattern will set up through at least mid-week, with more abundant moisture returning from the eastern Gulf and Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Unsettled weather will continue through late week as another cold front approaches from the northwest and then slowly crosses the region over the weekend.

Memorial Day

Since restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic prevent the gathering of large crowds to mark Memorial Day this year, here is a video and photo album of the 2015 observance in Macon County.

Hazards

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will impact the region again, mainly this afternoon and evening. The main threat will be from locally very heavy rainfall in these slowly moving showers and thunderstorms. With the ground already saturated, locations impacted by additional heavy downpours may see flooding develop quickly. Any of the thunderstorms will also produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. Remember to turn on your headlights when it is raining so other motorists can see you and slow down to avoid hydroplaning.

Wet weather will continue throughout the week. Moisture from a tropical source could arrive in the region on Wednesday, leading to additional heavy to excessive rainfall. With the ground already saturated, and many streams and creeks already running near bankfull, flooding could develop quickly from any additional heavy rainfall. Monitor the forecast closely throughout the week in case any Flash Flood Watches are needed.
