Asheville, N.C. - With an influx of visitors expected for the solar eclipse on August 21, U.S. Forest Service staff remind visitors to follow the principles of Leave No Trace to keep the forests clean and safe.
Plan ahead and prepare for the eclipse weekend, August 18 to 21. Know where you are planning to stay, bring a map, and check local weather before heading to the forest. Recreation sites on the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests are expected to be at full capacity for the eclipse so have alternative plans if needed.
Help protect natural resources by staying on paths and camping at designated sites. Do not camp closer than 200 feet to a water source. Be familiar with the rules and regulations of the site you plan to visit including prohibitions on alcohol consumption.
Dispose of waste and store food properly. Many areas do not have waste bins so bring your own trash bags, share with others, and be prepared to take waste home with you. If waste exceeds dumpster capacity, please do not leave trash at overflowing dumpsters or waste bins. Bears have been spotted on the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests and may be attracted by improperly stored waste and food. Do not store food, cooking supplies, or other scented items inside tents. Use a scent-proof container like a bear canister or the trunk of your car.
Be courteous of others visiting the forests. Keep dogs on leashes in developed recreation areas and in places with lots of people. Be respectful of other visitors who came to enjoy the eclipse in a quiet natural setting. Those seeking festivities should consider local community events that offer live music and children's activities and also provide a great view of the eclipse.
