Daily Weather Briefing for Monday, August 14, 2017





LOCAL OUTLOOK

A stationary front is expected to lift northward into the region on Monday, possibly washing out on Tuesday while another weak front approaches from the west. This next front will move into the region Tuesday night into Wednesday with a brief round of drier high pressure favored through Thursday. Another cold front will move into the area on Friday warranting increased chances for precipitation, with drier high pressure expected in its wake for Saturday into Sunday.

Highs Franklin area upper 70s to low 80s Nantahala, Highlands and higher elevation will be in the 70s. Skies partly to mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon are likely. Coverage will be in a hit or miss summer pattern. Some places will be clear during totality and others will not.

When you look at the forecast over the week, try to keep in mind what this may mean for traffic conditions. If possible, leave for work or play early on the 21st and always let family members and friends know what your plans are.

TODAY

Patchy fog in the morning. Mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-80s for the Franklin and Otto areas and ranging from the mid-70s to near 80 in Nantahala, Highlands and higher elevations. Calm winds in the morning, then from the south-southwest in the afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with chances peaking at around 60% in the late afternoon. Rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.


TONIGHT

Mostly cloudy with fog expected to develop mostly after midnight with lows in the 60s. Rain chances will diminish from 60% at 6 pm to 20% by midnight.




TUESDAY

Mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-80s. Calm winds in the morning rising to come out of the northwest in the afternoon. 40% chance of showers, mainly after noon.

TUESDAY NIGHT

Mostly cloudy with lows in the 60s and winds out of the north. 30% chance of showers.



WEDNESDAY

Partly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 80s. 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

We are now in the time frame of where storms that develop in the Caribbean Sea or Atlantic Basin could impact our view of the solar eclipse on August 21st.

Tropical Depression EIGHT has become Tropical Storm GERT and will likely become Hurricane Gert sometime Tuesday. The storm will parallel the east coast and poses no danger to the east coast.

For the North Atlantic...The Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Gert, located several hundred miles west-southwest of Bermuda.

1. A large and complex area of disturbed weather to the south and southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is associated with a broad trough of low pressure and a tropical wave. These systems are forecast to merge during the next day or two, and environmental conditions are then expected to be conducive for development of this disturbance later this week while it moves westward at about 15 mph over the tropical Atlantic.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
