HAZARDS

Hazardous weather is expected today. A dusting of snow to a couple of inches has fallen across the county overnight, making areas roads slick. The NCDOT has been out treating the main roads and will begin to work the secondary and tertiary roads once those are clear. Temperatures are likely to remain below freezing for much of the county until around noon tomorrow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook regarding today and tomorrow. It is posted below for your convenience:

NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook

..TODAY...Winter weather likely. See Winter Weather Advisory posted below for more information.

..THURSDAY...Black ice possible. With temperatures below freezing early Thursday morning, any residual water on roadways and elevated surfaces will likely refreeze, affecting travel conditions for Thursday`s morning commute.

***Winter Weather Advisory***
URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
948 PM EST Tue Jan 16 2018

...SNOW AND BLACK ICE EXPECTED ACROSS PARTS OF THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING...

.A strong cold front will cross the region through tonight. A band of mainly light precipitation and quickly falling temperatures will accompany the front as it passes. Although the precipitation begin as rain in many areas, it should quickly mix with and change to light snow. In addition to the snow accumulations, quickly falling temperatures may allow the snow to stick, and/or any water on untreated roads to quickly freeze, resulting in numerous travel problems early Wednesday, including during the morning rush. The snow should end from west to east by Wednesday afternoon, although cold temperatures continuing through the day are expected to result in only gradual improvement to road conditions.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Snow occurring and black ice likely. Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the morning commute on Wednesday. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected.

* WHERE...The mountains of northeast Georgia and western North Carolina.

* WHEN...Until 10 AM EST Wednesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...While many locations in the lower valleys may see less than an inch of snow accumulation, very cold temperatures surging into the area will result in residual moisture rapidly freezing on roads and other surfaces. High temperatures will be well below freezing tomorrow, so any improvement in road conditions will be slow. Cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin tonight through tomorrow.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Please report snow and ice accumulations by calling the National Weather Service toll free at...1...800...2 6 7...8 1 0 1. Leave a message with your observation and the specific location where it occurred. You can also post your report to National Weather Service Greenville Spartanburg Facebook or tweet your report using hashtag nwsgsp.
