The National Weather Service has updated the winter weather advisory that will be in effect from 6 pm tonight until 7 am in the morning with more information on the accumulation and timing of the snow.

They'still expecting a possible 1 to 2 inches for our area, mainly in the higher elevations. Whatever does lay will stick around for a couple of days due to the impending cold wave we will be experiencing until late Thursday. For information on that, see the daily weather briefing that was posted earlier this morning on the blog. [LINK]

Some area schools are dismissing early today in anticipation of the event. All schools in Jackson County except Smoky Mountain High School will release at 1:10 PM. Smoky Mountain High School will release at 1:30 PM.
As of 11:00 am, Macon County Schools are still in session. An update will be posted if they dismiss early.

The full text of the update to the advisory is posted below for your convenience.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
1051 AM EST Tue Jan 16 2018

...LIGHT SNOW EXPECTED ACROSS PARTS OF THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT...

.A fast moving cold front is expected to approach from the west today and move across the region late this afternoon through tonight. A band of light precipitation will accompany the front as it passes. Temperatures will fall off quickly as the front passes. Although the precipitation may begin as a brief period of rain, it should quickly mix with and change to light snow.
Although the amount of snow will be light, generally on the order of 1-2 inches over the mountains and the I-77 corridor, and an inch or less elsewhere, the cold temperatures may allow the snow to stick to untreated roads, resulting in numerous travel problems on untreated roads early Wednesday, including the morning rush hour. The snow should end by midday Wednesday.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Light snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions.
Total snow accumulations of up to two inches are expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia and western North Carolina.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 7 AM EST Wednesday. Most of the snow will taper off by around midnight. Thereafter, widespread black ice will develop on untreated roadways.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times, mainly this evening. Cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Please report snow and ice accumulations by calling the National Weather Service toll free at...1...800...2 6 7...8 1 0 1.
