Repaving Coming to U.S. 74
Project may start this month

SYLVA
– About 26.7 miles of road on two federal highways, plus eight other secondary roads will be repaved in Haywood and Jackson County.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $13 million contract to Harrison Construction Company Division of APAC-Atlantic Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn. The surface will be repaved on these routes:

A 10.2 miles on Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (U.S. 74) in both directions between Crabtree Road in Haywood County and Candle Stick Lane in Jackson County;
About 2.3 miles westbound on Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (U.S. 74) between Pete Taylor Road and Barkers Creek Road in Jackson County;
About 2.3 miles eastbound on Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (U.S. 74) between Barkers Creek Road and Haywood Road in Jackson County.
The Department awarded the contract in June 2018, and construction may start this month. The contractor has until Oct., 2019 to complete the projects.

This was one of 25 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by the NCDOT. Per state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth nearly $630 million.
