Mays & Frost Emergency Fund

Two children, Tristan Mays, age 2, and Shawna Mays, age 5, died as a result of a vehicle fire on the Jackson County side of Balsam Gap this week. Their mother, Kristina, suffered third and fourth-degree burns from her hips down and is in a burn unit in Winston-Salem. Tonight at 6 PM at the courthouse. Members of the community gather to pray and offer support to one another.

LOCAL OUTLOOK

Warm and moist high pressure will persist across the area today. A stormy cold front will cross the region this afternoon with cooler and drier air working in through the weekend. Mostly dry conditions will persist Monday and a general warming trend will occur through next week.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Beryl, located over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean more than a thousand miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles.

1. A well-defined low-pressure system located about midway between the southeastern United States and Bermuda is producing disorganized showers and a few thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development during the next couple of days while the system moves slowly northwestward then northward off the coast of North Carolina. Although the system is forecast to interact with a frontal zone early next week, it could linger off the southeast U.S. coast where some additional development is possible.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...40 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.

FRIENDS OF THE GREENWAY BUTTERFLY GARDEN RENEWAL CELEBRATION DAY

Friends of the Greenway is having a Butterfly Garden Renewal Celebration Day on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 9 AM to 11 AM. There will be a Ribbon Cutting at 9:30 AM to welcome the community to the renovated garden. Bringing back the eleven-year-old garden was funded in part with a grant from the Macon County Unrestricted Endowment Fund which is administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation. Find out about the butterflies that can be found in the area and the plants that maintain their lifecycle. Park behind the Shops at Riverwalk on Highlands Road. Follow the Greenway trail for a short distance--just past the Rotary Shelter. Rain date is Wednesday, July 11.
