In schools and colleges across America, teachers and professors recall the "Free Speech Movement" of the hard left at Berkeley in the 1960s. But today's left often shreds that idea in its own intolerant behavior. At Michigan State University, British Nationalist Nick Griffin was shouted down from a speech on the danger of radical Islam. The Lansing State Journal reported: "Hurling obscenities and using chants to interrupt his address, rambunctious student organizations forced Griffin to abandon his speech and allow an informal question and answer session." This liberal quote is a classic:
"We have all come from different backgrounds," said Authra Khreis, 17, a pre-med student and a protester. "We should accept one another. I don't think he should be allowed to speak. You can use free speech until you hurt another person."

Finally, did you see the kerfuffle the John Edwards campaign created around a college student reporter? The Raleigh News and Observer reported they demanded that Carla Babb, a reporter for the college TV station at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, pull down her "Republican"-sounding report on their headquarters:

And just who decides what is hurtful? Ruffled feathers? Someone who is hurt by the truth? A Presidential Campaign Staff in third place in their home state? Have you seen some of the signs carried by lefties (Commies) at protests around the country? What would their response be to Impeach Hillary For Campaign Fraud? Imprison Sandy Pants?
I almost wish that Hillary would win (she very well might), and then we would see just how the Neostalinist lefties really feel about Free Speech.
It is only Free Speechwhen it favors them or targets an opponent, and Hate Speech when it targets Lefties.
And in an effort to show that lefties do indeed hate America, I have included a portion of my headlines from West Carolina Report for today:

I don't understand how protesting speech isn't also speech...
I keep seeing this lately. Whenever a wingnut is protested they play the victim saying their free speech is being violated. Nonsense. Everyone gets the free speech, not just the people at the microphone.
If I'm invited to someone else's lecture, I'll hold my peace because it's uncivil to poop on another man's sofa. But if some nitwit is peddling nitwittery at my campus, I'll certainly protest his absurdity. There's nothing wrong with it.
You can call me neostalinist all you like - that's your right. Some would say it's inartful, inaccurate, and over-the-top in the worst way, but it's your right to sound like a lunatic.
When someone has the microphone at a scheduled forum, they have (by all rules of decorum) the floor. Audience participation is for the Question and Answer session.
BY this example of yours, then the GOP minority has the right to speak out of turn in the House or Senate, and act like uncivilized barbarians.
Speech is not Speech when it involves disrupting organized activities. It is violence. The students who interrupted speakers at the Islamo-fascism Awareness Week events were engaged in Political Violence, just as surely as the Brownshirts in 1930's Germany. Just as the anti-American war protesters are engaged in giving aid and comfort to the enemy, who become emboldened, and heartened by the public display of their political allies in America.
Some would say I am over-the-top? But not you right, because you know that in your heart Stalin is alive and well, just itching to get out.
Like Patton said to Rommel, "You magnificent bastard, I read your book!" Then proceeded to open a can of whupass.
TP you took the words right out of my mouth. Fabulous job taking on the historically illiterate from the Leftist blogosphere. Evidently the Gordon Smiths of the world are the ones that "will not" learn from history, and sadly are destined to repeat it.
Your analogy of the 1930s Brown Shirts in Germany, to what happened at Emory University to David Horowitz is spot on.
It's absolutely mind boggling that many from the Left have the same sentiments as Scrutiny Hoolie concerning this episode. I'm shocked that someone would come right out and defend the actions of these Brown Shirts shouting down a speaker they disagree with. What happened to liberal academia, and the Leftists who espoused free speech, but then will deny an invited speaker that same right? WHAT HYPOCRITES!!
The Left, and liberal academia will give round after round of applause to a terrorist and killer of innocents like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But then would deny a Conservative the right to speak by shouting him down. And Mr. Smith has the gall to stand up and defend this blatant abridgment of a persons free speech by these Emory University thugs. You don't see Conservatives shouting down invited speakers at colleges and universities. Conservatives debate the issues. I guess that's the problem, Liberals cannot. What's the matter guys? What are you afraid of? I saw the answer to that at Emory University. It seems it's free speech, and the lack of any cogent debating ability.
No doubt form the stance that Mr. Smith has articulated on the subject, he would have vigorously defended Ahmadinejad's right to speak at a university, but would have supported the abridgment of a Conservatives free speech by being shouted down.
I'm just astounded that someone would defend these fascists actions of denying an invited guest the right to speak. It's really shocking, and truly scary that we have what seems to be a "Fifth Column" of Leftists like Gordon Smith, who from within our own country would trash one of "the" most cherished rights. Freedom of Speech. Be afraid America, be "very" afraid! If these Socialist/Liberal/Progressive/Communists/Democrats like the Hooligans get control.
