Macon Media will be running a new feature on Fridays from the North Carolina Department of Transportation with a weekly roundup of news and a short video.
RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Donate Life NC Milestone
Are you familiar with the question “Would you like to join the organ donor list?” when speaking with a DMV examiner at a North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles office? If you responded with a yes during that visit, then you’re part of the 54 percent of North Carolinians who have registered as organ donors, which is indicated by a small red heart on one’s driver’s license.
Currently, more than 116,000 Americans and nearly 3,000 North Carolinians are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. However, as a result of efforts between the NCDMV and Donate Life North Carolina, the state now has the sixth largest organ donor registry in the country.
This week, the milestone of 5 million registered organ donors was celebrated at the State Capitol in Raleigh.
“It’s a matter of life and death. Without Donate Life and without the help of the NCDMV to push all of that along, to help get people signed up, some of us could very likely not be here,” said Josh Holmes, a NCDMV examiner and heart transplant recipient.

Powell Bill Distributions
In other news, the N.C. Department of Transportation has begun distributing more than $147 million in state street aid to local municipalities, also known as the Powell Bill.
This year, the program will assist more than 500 local governments with improvements or repairs to roads they maintain, along with construction or maintenance of bridges, drainage, curbs and gutters.
Seventy-five percent of the funding is determined by population, while 25 percent is based on the number of locally maintained street miles.
Walk to School Day
Finally, thousands of parents, students, teachers and community leaders across North Carolina joined together for Walk to School Day on Wednesday. It is an annual celebration that encourages families to consider getting to school on foot or bicycle.
While North Carolina is the ninth most populous state in the country, it ranks fourth in the number of Walk to School day events with a total of 250 participating communities this year.
