The official rainfall high in Macon County was 9.37 inches in Highlands, enough to break the old record for October 8th that was set in 1879 with 3.50 inches in Franklin and enough for a 4th place in the all-time record for Macon County. 21.15 inches of rain recorded on July 29, 1879, in Highlands still remains the highest amount of rain to fall in a single day in Macon County, and North Carolina.
Winds knocked out power to several thousand Maconians with over 1,400 households remaining out of of service at 3:50 am when this report was filed. Duke estimates power will be restored before 7 am.
