Warren Cabe, Director

Macon County residents should pay close attention to weather forecasts in the coming days as Hurricane Irma inches closer to the east coast of the United States. Although the exact path is still very unpredictable, most models indicate some impact on most of North Carolina including the western mountains. The impact will probably not affect our region until early next week but any necessary preparations should begin now.

Tropical weather systems that are remnants of hurricanes have affected our region in the past and this storm is one of the most severe storms to strike the United States in recent history, Damaging rains and high winds can spread far outside the eye of the storm. A projected storm track that indicates the center of the storm traveling through areas east or west of our location does not mean that we will not feel the effects of the storm here.

Residents should pay particular attention to flood prone areas and be prepared to evacuate if flooding impacts our region. High winds and the threat of tornadoes also accompany tropical weather systems.

Now is a good time for residents to check their disaster supplies, including such items as non-perishable food and water supplies, to be prepared not just for this event but for future weather events especially through the winter season that might affect our area. Remember to keep necessary medication prescriptions filled and be prepared for power outages and loss of other utility services. Stay tuned to local media sources for future updates.
