Outlook

Windy and cooler conditions are expected today. Snow showers are possible across high elevations through this evening with mostly sunny skies elsewhere. A fast-moving upper-level disturbance may bring another round of showers day Saturday focused across high elevations, where snow is expected to prevail. A wet pattern may return next week as a cold front is poised to stall across the region.

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS

Franklin and Nantahala area schools are closed today.


Highlands School is on a two-hour delay with no buses on icy roads.

...SLIPPERY ROADWAYS TO DEVELOP AS TEMPERATURES FALL THIS MORNING ACROSS THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS...

Temperatures falling to the freezing mark across the North Carolina mountains this morning will cause wet roadways to freeze up and become quite slippery throughout the day. In addition, scattered snow showers will return from the west through the morning hours, with light accumulations at elevations above 3500 feet.

Use caution if traveling in the North Carolina mountains today. Slow down and allow extra travel time to reach your destination.

Heavy Rains Bring Minor Flooding

A period of heavy rain resulted in several low-lying areas of the county being flooded by creeks and rivers. Local VFDs responded to close several roads and remove people from hazardous conditions. Yesterday's public safety log has most of the information. [LINK]

County Commissioners Begin Annual Budget Process

The Macon County Board of Commissioners began their annual budget process yesterday and met from 10am to a little after 3:30pm to hear from department heads and outside agencies on their budget concerns. The meeting was streamed live on Facebook and the live version of the videos are posted on the Macon Media website, along with the agenda. A recorded version of the meeting, along with supporting documentation, will be published in the coming days. [LINK]

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph at times.

* WHERE...Upstate South Carolina, northeast Georgia, and Piedmont and western North Carolina.

* WHEN...Until 6 PM EST this evening.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The very windy conditions may impact residents and responders attempting cleanup and repairs from the damage on Thursday. Use extreme caution if working outdoors today, especially under trees or power lines. Wet soils from recent heavy rainfall may result in weakened root systems, causing more trees to fall from lower than usual wind speeds.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.
