Outlook

A weak cold front will move very slowly southeast across the southern Appalachians today through Tuesday before stalling just to our south. The boundary will move back north as a warm front through the middle of the week as another low-pressure system and attendant cold front approach from the west. The next cold front, and associated moisture, will cross the region Wednesday night through Thursday, with cool and dry high pressure settling into the area Friday through Saturday. Weather Hazards

Another storm system will bring heavy rainfall to the area late today through early Tuesday. Up to an additional 2-3 inches of rain could fall on already saturated ground, increasing the risk of flooding.

A copy of the Flood Watch that will be in effect for Macon County starting at 1pm is posted below for your convenience.

Flood Watch
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
340 AM EST Mon Feb 10 2020

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT BEGINNING MONDAY AFTERNOON AS HEAVY RAIN RETURNS TO THE AREA...

.A stalled frontal boundary will bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the southwest North Carolina mountains, parts of northeast Georgia, and far western Upstate South Carolina beginning this afternoon. With the ground saturated from heavy rainfall last week, and rivers still running high, flooding impacts are possible in areas that see more heavy rain overnight tonight.

...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING...

The Flood Watch continues for portions of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas:

In northeast Georgia: Franklin, Habersham, Rabun, and Stephens.
In western North Carolina: Graham, Haywood, Macon, Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Swain, and Transylvania.
In upstate South Carolina: Greater Oconee, Greater Pickens, Oconee Mountains, and Pickens Mountains.

* from 1 PM EST this afternoon through Tuesday evening

* Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches (locally higher in some spots) are expected tonight and Tuesday, which may lead to new flooding and worsen conditions in areas that have not yet recovered from flooding last week. Saturated ground and continued high river and stream levels may lead to flooding developing quickly.

* Rapid rises above bankfull on streams and creeks may occur, along with the threat of flooded roadways. Flooding is also likely to re-develop on larger rivers. The heavy rainfall will also greatly increase the risk of landslides.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
