Outlook

Developing low-pressure system off the Southeast coast will allow for rain and wintry weather to spread across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia today and tonight. High pressure will move into the area for the weekend, allowing for dry conditions to prevail, with rain chances returning early next week with the next approaching system.


Macon County Schools Schedule for Today, 02-20-2020

Franklin area schools are closed.
Highlands school is closed.
Nantahala school is on a two-hour delay.

How Much Snow?



The National Weather Service says the Franklin area will see an inch or so and elevations above 3,000 feet will see 2 to 4 inches today and the highest peaks in the county will receive somethin152g in the 3 to 5-inch range.

Candidate Forum February 22

The Smoky Mountain Republican Women is sponsoring a forum for congressional candidates this Saturday, February 22, from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. in the meeting room of United Community Bank, located at 132 Rodney Orr By-pass in Robbinsville.

Candidates for other races will be allowed to speak.

“Everyone is invited to come and participate. Candidates need to know which issues are important to people in the westernmost part of the state,” said Charlene Hogue, club president.

There will be no admission fee charged for the forum and light refreshments will be provided.

Weather Hazards

The National Weather Service is calling for snow today in Macon County and a copy of the Winter Weather Advisoy has been posted below for your convenience. Please don't be stupid and get out on the roads if conditions begin to deteriorate. YOu're not only putting your won property and life at risk, you're putting the poperty and lives of others at risk, too. The rain is expected to turn to snow in the midmorning hours. While temperatures in the Franklin area are not forecast to drop below freezing until late in the afternoon, if enough snow falls, the avaporative effect could cause temperatures to drop faster than the National Weather Service has forecast, so be careful on the roads today and tonight.

...ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED TODAY ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND THE NORTHEAST GEORGIA MOUNTAINS...

.Moisture returning from the south into an increasingly cold airmass will produce accumulating snowfall across portions of the area later today. The precipitation will begin as rain, or as a mix of sleet, rain, and snow in many areas, but should steadily transition to snow throughout the day.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, with higher amounts possible above 3500 feet.

* WHERE...The North Carolina mountains and the mountains of northeast Georgia.

* WHEN...Until midnight EST tonight.

* IMPACTS...Although roads will initially be warm and wet, plan on slippery road conditions developing through the day. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Widespread black ice will likely develop tonight through Friday morning as temperatures fall into the teens and 20s behind the storm.
