Report says homosexuality linked with health problems

PRESS RELEASE

Study reveals differences in health care access and status for gays and lesbians; even larger disparities reported by bisexuals.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has released the nation’s first statewide population-based look at health disparities based on sexual orientation. The report revealed significant disparities among people who identified as homosexual or bisexual in the areas of access to care, self-reported health status, anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, smoking, binge drinking, illicit drug use, sexual assault victimization, intimate partner violence, disability, obesity, asthma and heart disease.

Data for the report was obtained through Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys undertaken in the state between 2001 — when a question on sexual orientation was added to the survey — and 2006.

Some of the findings from the report include:

  • The odds of being a current smoker were 2.5 times greater for gays and lesbians compared to heterosexuals.

  • Bisexuals were 3.1 times more likely than heterosexuals to report feeling tense or worried.

  • Lesbians were 2.2 times more likely than heterosexual women to be obese.

  • Bisexuals were 4.4 times and gays/lesbians 1.5 times more likely than heterosexuals to report their health as "poor" or "fair."

Researchers found that in many cases the disparities were even greater for bisexuals than for gay/lesbians when compared with their heterosexual counterparts. Dr. Kerith Conron, Research Fellow, Harvard School of Public Health and lead author of the report, said, "This report identifies major health disparities faced by lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. Bisexuals particularly face greater health disparities in the areas of mental health and violence victimization. Specific interventions should be developed to work with the bisexual population in these areas."

Health officials also hope that the report will stimulate further study on ways to reduce and eliminate health disparities faced by gay, lesbian and bisexual people. Stewart Landers, MDPH Senior Researcher on the project, added that "the valuable insights provided by this report highlight the importance of adding sexual orientation questions to population-based surveys, such as the BRFSS undertaken by each state."

The project was supported with funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The evidence keeps rolling in as to the destructive nature of this lifestyle. Of course, Political correctness would have us ignore the evidence in favor of political goals...like the lies behind the Global Warming Hoax.

It is funny how you add words to a report that were never there. Like any lefty, you know so much that just isn't so.

"people like me" are the cause of these problems:

huh? Wow. Sling much mud?

Perhaps if homosexuals did not identify themselves by their sexuality then they wouldn't have many of the psychological instability problems they do.

I do not identify myself by my sexuality, and I imagine that if I did, and found slight and offense everywehere, it would lead to the same type of instability these people experience.

The fact remains that the homosexual sex act is un-natural, dangerous, and is just asking for an infection of one type or another.

TP, the title that you posted highlights some of the explanation:

differences in health care access and status

It is somewhat intellectually dishonest to post those exact words and then accuse the "lefties" of adding things that aren't there. It is not hard to see the correlation between lack of access to health care and increased health problems. Its simply logic. We see this in many different groups all over the world, and in a first world nation, one tends to see it most in marginalized groups.

If you are going to make arguments, at least make sure that the logic is somewhat sound. It will be harder for "lefties" to attack you.

Just to avoid any charges of "ad hominem" from you. How about just considering the possibility that oppressing people makes their health worse. Can homosexuals tell their christian doctor about their personal lives without fear of discrimination? Can they express their feeling in the world, or are they told to keep those icky feeling to themselves. How about forming community in order to decrease stress, anxiety, and depression?

Anyway - you drew the wrong conclusions from the report.

Oh we're ALL victims of someone, or some group according to progressive lefties. Np Access to health care? Pleassseee! It's well documented that the homosexual demographic is one of the wealthiest groups in the nation. So stop with the victimization nonsense.

It's also well documented that the homosexual lifestyle, in to many cases is fraught with disease and health problems.

Epidemic Feared - 'Gays' May Spread Deadly Staph Infection to General Population
15 January 2008

Although outbreaks of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, have primarily been confined to hospitals in the past, the study determined that, due to “high risk behaviors” beyond hospital walls - such as “anal sex” - men who have sex with men are now 13 times more likely to contract the infection.

Because this particular strain can be transmitted through “skin-to-skin contact,” researchers fear the outbreak “has the potential for rapid, nationwide dissemination” and will spread to “the general population.” Once it does, they say it will be “unstoppable.” Dr. Binh Diep, the researcher who led the study, told Reuters, “Once this reaches the general population, it will be truly unstoppable … ‘We think that it’s spread through sexual activity.’”

It’s bad news for the “gay rights” community: political correctness won’t forever win out over the ugly reality of the many diseases afflicting the homosexual community.

It’s not “compassionate” to avoid this subject, though it’s certainly understandable that most people would prefer to. There is, after all, nothing about this conversation that fits the old definition of the word “gay.”

Here are just a few facts about the dangers of homosexual behavior:

* A 1997 New York Times article reported that a young male homosexual has about a 50% chance of getting HIV by middle age.
* By 1998, 54% of all AIDS cases in America were homosexual men and 90% of these men acquired HIV through sexual activity.
* One study found that the life expectancy for homosexual males is from eight to 20 years less compared to heterosexual males.
* The risk of getting anal cancer soars by 4000% in those who engage in anal intercourse.

Since this is such an incredibly unappealing subject, below are just a few links for further reading.

Center for Disease Control

The CDC warns that men who have sex with men can result in rapid, extensive transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.

International Journal of Epidemiology

Medical studies and other evidence indicate that individuals who engage in homosexual behavior experience dramatically higher risks of domestic violence, mental illness, substance abuse, life-threatening disease, multiple sex partners and premature death by up to 20 years. College-aged men who engage in homosexual behavior are at risk of dying up to 20 years younger than other men, according to Oxford University's International Journal of Epidemiology, which reported: "Life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 20 years less than for all men -- nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years will not reach their 65th birthday."

American Journal of Psychiatry

“Distress and Depression in Men Who Have Sex With Men: The Urban Men’s Health Study”

“CONCLUSIONS: Rates of distress and depression are high in men who have sex with men. These high rates have important public health ramifications. The predictors of distress and depression suggest prevention efforts that might be effective when aimed at men who have sex with men.”

Journal of the American Medical Association - General Psychiatry

Same-Sex Sexual Behavior and Psychiatric Disorders

Findings From the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS)

“Conclusion: The findings support the assumption that people with same-sex sexual behavior are at greater risk for psychiatric disorders.”

Corporate Resource Council

“Sexual relationships between members of the same sex expose gays, lesbians, and bisexuals to extreme risks of sexually transmitted diseases, physical injuries, mental disorders and even a shortened life span.”

The pro-homosexual advocates always use these specious, and deceptive arguments of victimization in an attempt to claim the moral high ground. But when news stories are spun a certain way by selective reporting, or when homosexual activists suppress their true agenda, trying to deceive the public into social acceptance of a destructive and dangerous sexual behavior, then those arguments claiming the moral high ground are invalidated.

No doubt polygamists and 'loving' incestuous relationships between adult family members are in the same boat, according to the pro-homosexual supporters analysis. What nonsense!
