NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING
• President Joe Biden designated Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning to honor former President Jimmy Carter, coinciding with his state funeral at Washington National Cathedral.
• Federal government offices, courts, the U.S. Postal Service, and major stock exchanges will close for the day, while flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days.
• National Days of Mourning for presidents date back to 1826, with current traditions formalized during Dwight D. Eisenhower's death in 1969.
GENERAL OUTLOOK
An area of low pressure will form near the Texas coast early today and track across the Gulf Coast and reach the Carolinas Friday into early Saturday. Moisture spreads over our region in the cold air with wintry weather forecast which ends on Saturday as the low moves off to the east. Dry and cold weather returns early next week.

* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Outside the mountains, total snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 3 inches and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch possible. Over the mountains, total snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches possible.
* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia, Piedmont and western North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina.
* WHEN...From Friday morning through Saturday morning.
* IMPACTS...Snow and ice accumulations will make many roads treacherous and impassable. The weight of the snow and ice on tree limbs and power lines could produce scattered outages. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes.
