GENERAL OUTLOOK

Low pressure moving across the region will provide widespread rain this morning, with a wintry mix across portions of the mountains. A round of light snow showers could develop late tonight or Sunday near the Tennessee border. Arctic high pressure returns Monday bringing bitter cold to the region for next week. A storm system is expected to track from the northern Gulf of Mexico to off the Southeast Coast midweek.

GENERAL FORECAST

.TODAY...Cloudy with rain and snow likely in the morning, then partly sunny with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Areas of fog in the morning, then patchy fog in the afternoon. Visibility one quarter mile or less at times in the morning. Little or no snow accumulation. Highs in the lower 40s. WInds out of the south 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
..TONIGHT...Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain. Areas of fog. A chance of freezing rain after midnight. Visibility one quarter mile or less at times. Ice accumulation around a trace. Lows in the lower 30s. Winds out of the west around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent.
..SUNDAY...A chance of rain showers and freezing rain in the morning. Areas of fog in the morning. Snow showers likely. Little or no snow accumulation. Windy with highs in the mid 30s. Temperature falling into the mid 20s in the afternoon. Winds out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, increasing to 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
..SUNDAY NIGHT...Mostly cloudy. A chance of snow showers in the evening. Light snow accumulation possible. Windy and much colder with lows around 3 above. Winds out of the northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Chance of snow 30 percent. Wind chill values as low as 17 below.
..MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY...Sunny, windy and much colder with highs 10 to 15. Wind chill values as low as 20 below.
..MONDAY NIGHT...Partly cloudy. Cold with lows zero to 5 above zero. Wind chill values as low as 10 below.


HAZARDOUS WEATHER

A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will develop in higher elevations into early today. Accumulations will be light, but slippery conditions still could develop on bridges, overpasses, and decks by daybreak today.

Mixed precipitation may continue in some areas this morning before changing to rain.

An arctic air mass moves into the area Sunday night and remains in place through Wednesday. Some areas of the mountains will fall below freezing Sunday evening and not rise back above freezing until Wednesday or even Thursday. Furthermore, wind chill values may fall to dangerous levels Sunday night and Monday. The potential for any wintry precipitation during this time remains highly uncertain.
