MACON COUNTY COMMISSIONER SEPTEMBER MEETING
The Macon County Commissioners met for their regular monthly meeting last night in the courthouse. Among the items they approved was a request from Sheriff Holland to pursue a grant of $65,000 to purchase car cameras and body cams. Video of the meeting will be published later today.
LOCAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
A stationary front will remain from the Texas coast to Virginia through midweek, bringing showers and thunderstorms to our area. Hurricane Florence may make landfall somewhere along the Carolina coast early Friday. There will be an increasing threat for flooding as the remnants of Florence drifts inland.
Hazardous Weather Outlook for the National Weather Service
Impacts from heavy rainfall due to Tropical Cyclone Florence are becoming increasingly likely late this week into early next week. Preparedness measures for flooding rain, landslides in mountainous areas, and gusty winds that could damage trees and power lines should be taken. The track of Tropical Cyclone Florence will need to be closely monitored by interests across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia throughout the week.
A map of the current thinking of the National Hurricane Center as to where the rain will fall and how much. These totals are subject to change.

TROPICAL OUTLOOK
The computer models continue to struggle in coming up with a solution that accurately forecasts the movement of FLORENCE. The latest feature to show up is a high-pressure ridge and steering currents at the 500 mb level of the upper atmosphere that will temporarily prevent Hurricane Florence from escaping to the north as most hurricanes do shortly after making landfall.
Right now, it looks like the storm will weaken and move west as a Tropical Depression. Rainfall amounts for Macon County are still uncertain as the storm remnants are forecast to slowly drift our way. The NHC consensus 5 Day Cone for 2 am this morning is posted below. (Remember that the forecasts for this storm are changing every few hours as more data from weather instruments in the region, Hurricane Hunters, and weather balloons are added into the computer models.

Tropical Weather Outlook
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
200 AM EDT Wed Sep 12 2018
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane Florence, located over the western Atlantic Ocean, on Hurricane Helene, located over the eastern Atlantic, and on Tropical Storm Isaac, located several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
1. Showers and thunderstorms have not become any better organized during the past several hours in association with a trough of low pressure located over the south-central Gulf of Mexico. In addition, satellite data and surface observations indicate that there is still no sign of a surface circulation. However, upper-level winds are forecast to become more conducive for development, and a tropical depression is likely to form on Thursday or Friday before the system reaches the western Gulf Coast. An Air Force reconnaissance plane is scheduled to investigate the system later today, if necessary. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected across portions of northeastern Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana late this week, and interests there should monitor the progress of this system.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent.
2. A non-tropical area of low pressure located several hundred miles west of the Azores is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms and gale-force winds. This system could gradually acquire tropical or subtropical characteristics during the next few days while it meanders over the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. For more information, see High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...40 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
