HAZARDS

A flood watch is in effect until 8:00 pm tonight.

An unstable atmosphere aided by moderately strong deep layered shear will support strong to severe thunderstorm development this afternoon, mainly across the foothills and piedmont of the Carolinas and northeast Georgia. Some storms may become organized and long-lived capable of producing damaging outflow winds and large hail.

***FLOOD WATCH***

Flood Watch
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
952 PM EDT Wed Sep 26 2018

...Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Portions of the Western North Carolina Mountains...

.A slowly moving cold front and ample moisture originating out of the Gulf of Mexico will focus periods of heavy rain across the North Carolina mountains through Thursday evening. The heavy rain will be capable of producing flash flooding across the area.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for a portion of western North Carolina, including the following areas:

Avery, Graham, Haywood, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Northern Jackson, Swain, and Yancey.

* through Thursday evening

* Showers and thunderstorms with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected across the area through Thursday in association with a slow moving cold front. Runoff from this heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding.

* People in the watch area should be aware of the threat of heavy rainfall. Avoid low lying areas and be careful when approaching highway dips and underpasses. Do not drive through flooded spots on roads, especially if you do not know how deep the water is.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Fontana Regional Library to Observe Banned Books Week

With the American Library Association, Fontana Regional Library will celebrate Banned Books Week 2018 September 23-29. The nationwide observance brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, authors, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek out and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

A banned book is one that has been removed from a school or library based upon the objections of a person or group; a challenged book is one that is threatened with removal or restriction. In many cases, a challenge is unsuccessful and the book remains on the shelf.
