Fire consumes about 70 acres near Cals Cove Road
A loose fire spread from private property to lands owned by the state and federal governments on Friday. Firefighters from the NC Forest Service and US Forest Service were deployed to fight the fire while Otto VFD engaged in structure protection. Using a plane to spot and a helicopter to drop water, firefighters managed to keep the fire within 30 acres on Friday. A brief rain early on Saturday did little to help the firefighters, who were working in very rough terrain. A plane continued to spot for firefighters and an additional helicopter worked the fire Saturday afternoon. The fire reached about 50 acres in size on Saturday and about 70 by Sunday.
