OUTLOOK

Warm conditions will linger today, south of a weak stationary front and ahead of an approaching strong cold front. The cold front will cross our area from the northwest on Thursday morning, with cooler high pressure spreading over the region for Friday and Saturday. Low pressure with abundant moisture is expected to affect our region on Sunday and Monday.

BURN BAN

A ban on open burning in the 32 western counties of North Carolina is in effect until further notice. [LINK]



GENERAL FORECAST THROUGH FRIDAY

Today

Partly sunny with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs ranging from the upper 60s to near 80. Winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. The chance of rain is 40 percent.

Tonight

Partly cloudy in the evening, then mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely after midnight. Lows ranging from the upper 40s to the mid-50s. Winds out of the west 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Thursday

Partly sunny with showers and thunderstorms likely in the morning, then sunny in the afternoon. Highs ranging from the mid-50s to the lower 60s. Winds out of the northwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy. Much cooler with lows ranging from near freezing to the mid-30s. Winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Friday

Sunny. Highs ranging from the upper 40s to the lower 50s. Winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph in the morning.

Friday Night

Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 30s.


HAZARDS

More severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon over the higher terrain. The storms should dissipate this evening, but another round of strong to severe thunderstorms may reach the mountains from the west in the pre-dawn hours Thursday morning. These storms could produce more severe weather across the mountains through the middle part of the day on Thursday as a cold front moves through.

A burn ban is in effect until further notice. [LINK]

The CDC website [LINK] reports 2,870 people in North Carolina are infected and that the infections are widespread, the NCDHHS website [LINK] reports 3,221 cases, 354 hospitalized and 40 deaths in the state. The Johns Hopkins Dashboard [LINK] reports 3,347 people infected and 58 deaths (these include non-residents located in NC).
