* WHAT...South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph expected.

* WHERE...Elevations above 3500 feet in Madison, Swain, Haywood, Graham, Jackson, and Macon Counties.

* WHEN...Until 3 PM EST this afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs and scattered trees could be blown down. A few power outages may result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.


News Brief


In the last week, 5 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in area schools (2 at South Macon Elementary, 1 each at Franklin High School, Highlands School, and Macon Middle School) and there were outbreaks detected at Macon Valley Nursing Home and Eckerd Living Center. [LINK]



The number of known active COVID-19 Cases in the county increased from 38 on Monday to 66 on Friday. The current wave of infections started after Labor Day, when the number of known active cases stood at 7 people, as reflected in the above graphic. The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Theta, located over the far eastern Atlantic, and on recently upgraded Hurricane Iota, located over the southwestern Caribbean Sea.

Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 5 days.
