Area Manufacturer Threatens Legal Action on Congressional Candidate

**3.45 pm** I failed to note the included communications between Mumpower and the Manufacturer referenced in the press release. I have corrected the error and have added it below.

PRESS RELEASE

Plasticard Locktech International, the nation's largest key card manufacturer, has taken the unusual step of threatening legal action against a Congressional candidate. On Friday. NC's 11th District Republican candidate of the House of Representatives, Carl Mumpower, received correspondence from the company's legal counsel advising Mumpower that, unless he took certain steps, the company would take 'necessary action to protect its image and its interests as an employer of choice in Asheville and Western North Carolina'.

Earlier, Mumpower had publically requested a meeting with three area industries, Plasticard, Nypro, and Plasti-Form, regarding information he had received alleging that each of the companies was hiring illegal employees. In his communications, Mumpower stressed that he had no position on the accuracy of the information, but that he and others did have an interest in sharing the concerns directly.

As an Asheville City Councilman, Mumpower has been a persisting voice of opposition to illegal immigration. He was instrumental in a recent ICE raid at Mills Manufacturing that ultimately resulted in the firing of a large number of illegal employees from that company and others and the implementation of more thorough screening processes at the plants.

Mumpower has been criticized by members of the faith based community and social service agencies for 'disrupting the lives and families of workers who, though here illegally, were contributing citizens'. Mumpower, in turn, has been unapologetic, using his Congressional run as a high visibility opportunity that, in his words, "gives me further power to resist what is the greatest law breaking scheme in America's history."

The Congressional candidate has responded to Plasticard's attorney's information request while also relaying that information directly to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Charlotte. "I have no way of knowing if Plasticard is breaking the law," said Mumpower. "Their attorney has offered assurances that I appreciate and now he has information on hand that may help validate those assurances. ICE also has information that they can now use to validate Plasticard's good citizenship and compliance with the law."

Mumpower has indicated he will continue to challenge area employers who may be using illegal workers. "We all know this is going on," said Mumpower. "With the indifference, political correctness, and fear demonstrated by most elected officials, one of the few tools for change I have is the power to turn on the lights."

"I will not back down in the face of legal threats, personal intimidation, or public ridicule," said Mumpower. "If I don't have the courage to stand up for what is right on my home turf, there is no reason to believe I will have the courage to do what is right in Washington. I have been on this issue for years, and I will stay on it no matter what happens in November or how much those who fund and enable illegal immigration turn up the heat."

Commentary

It is times like these that I wished I did live in the Asheville area...I would love to do some investigating of some of the big plants and construction companies that employ illegal aliens.

I am glad to see Carl Mumpower involved in going after these law breakers.

**3.45 pm** This is the material I overlooked in this morning's post. My apologies for the oversight.

Dear Mr. Yarbrough:

Thank you for your letter and reassurance that Plasticard Locktech is in compliance with Federal laws regarding the employment of illegal aliens. I only wish that all of our area employers and the contractors for our city and county governments were equally conscientious.

Attached is the information you requested - including the names of 10 employees that are allegedly using fake names and social security numbers while employed at Plasticard Locktech.

Re: Plasticard Locktech International

Dear Dr. Mumpower:

I represent Plasticard Locktech International and am in receipt of your letter dated September 26, 2008. I have also reviewed your website posting from September 18, 2008 which can be found here: http://www.mumpower08.com/content/view/227/15/. In both your letter and website posting you claim to have "credible evidence" that Plasticard Locktech International employs illegal aliens as a "major part" of its workforce. Please note that Plasticard Locktech International takes its responsibilities as an employer very seriously and makes every effort to comply with all federal and state employment laws including, but not limited to, the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

If you truly have credible information that Plasticard Locktech International has in its employ any illegal aliens, I invite you to share such information with me. I would be happy to review any information you might have with Mark Goldberg and Plasticard Locktech International's Human Resources Department. Please be advised that Plasticard Locktech International is not amenable to meeting with you and three or four other unidentified individuals. Plasticard Locktech International's personnel files are private and confidential company documents not to be shared with unauthorized third parties. Therefore, a meeting with you and unidentified others would not be productive since Plasticard Locktech International would not be at liberty to discuss the employment status or nationality of persons within its employ.

Again, should you truly have credible information to support your claims that Plasticard Locktech International is employing illegal aliens, I invite you to share it with and I promise to give it my immediate attention. Otherwise, I am going to ask that you immediately remove all references and allegations currently on your website and refrain from issuing any further campaign statements regarding my client and its employees. Should you not govern yourself and your campaign accordingly, Plasticard Locktech International will take necessary action to protect its image and its interests as an employer of choice in Asheville and Western North Carolina.

Kindly please direct all further communications regarding this matter to my attention. I look forward to hearing from you shortly and in any event before Friday, October 10, 2008.

Sincerely,

Jonathan W. Yarbrough
