High pressure centered over the western Atlantic and an upper-level trough over the eastern part of the nation will provide a southerly flow bringing moisture north from the Gulf through the weekend. An upper-level disturbance crossing the area today will lead to widespread showers. Summer heat returns through the weekend and next week with a daily chance of afternoon and evening showers and storms.

On January 1, 2017, the Syringe Exchange Program of Franklin began operating a comprehensive harm reduction program to address the opioid epidemic that is impacting western NC.
