LOCAL OUTLOOK

Dry high pressure will maintain pleasant warm conditions across the area through the weekend. A stationary front will settle near the western North Carolina mountains Sunday afternoon through Monday which could generate showery activity. By Tuesday evening... a rainy cold front with isolated thunderstorms possible will reach the forecast area and cross east through early Wednesday afternoon. A broad area of high pressure will then build in and persist through Friday.

Series of Dementia Workshops Coming in March and April

A campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia is underway in Macon County with the support of area churches, the Southwestern Commission Area Agency on Aging, Macon County Public Library, Angel Medical, Macon County Senior Services, and Macon County DSS.

Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church has partnered with a growing list of area churches throughout Macon County to host a workshop series, ‘Dementia Friends NC’ beginning on Tuesdays, March 20, 2018. Designed to help build awareness about dementia and identify ways local citizens can help people who are living with it in our community, the four-session workshop series is being made possible through a Missional Engagement Team Grant of the Smoky Mountain District of The United Methodist Church.

The 90-minute sessions will take place on four consecutive Tuesdays, beginning March 20, 2018, with both afternoon and evening sessions offered, as well as choice of venue.  All 2:00 p.m. sessions will be offered at the John & Dorothy Crawford Senior Center.   All 7:00 p.m. sessions will be offered at the Macon County Public Library.


ALL WORKSHOPS WILL BE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

On January 1, 2017, the Syringe Exchange Program of Franklin began operating a comprehensive harm reduction program to address the opioid epidemic that is impacting western NC. Opioid overdose reversal kits including naloxone are available free of charge. SHERIFF SEEKS PUBLIC HELP TO SOLVE DOUBLE MURDER



Two brothers, Fransisco (34 years old) and Diego (39 years old) Altamirano, were found dead in the back of a White 2003 Chevy Silverado this week on Jack Cabe Road. Both had been shot. AGENDA FOR APRIL 2nd MEETING OF TOWN COUNCIL RELEASED

The Town of Franklin has released the public agenda and the agenda packet for the April 2, 2018, meeting of the Franklin Town Council. Macon Media has posted the documents on the blog in their entirety in order to promote accountability and transparency in local government. [LINK]

The meeting begins at 6 pm and will take place in the lower level of town hall. A separate article will be posted with video from the meeting.

Please note that a budget work session has been scheduled for Monday, April 16th at 5:30 pm. This meeting will also take place in the town hall.

VIETNAM VETERANS DAY PARADE AND CEREMONY

On Saturday, March 31, 2018, a parade will be held on Main Street for veterans of the Vietnam War. Those who wish to participate may line line up in the town hall parking lot beginning at 10 am. The parade will start at 11 am and disperse on Iotla Street. The ceremony will start shortly afterward.

This now nationally observed day of recognition for Vietnam Veterans was first observed in Macon County in 2009. Video of that event is on this blog. [LINK]



FRIENDS OF THE GREENWAY FUNDRAISER FOR FEBRUARY AND MARCH

Fundraiser for Friends of the Greenway--an indoor flea market is continuing every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in February and every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in March at FROG Quarters, 573 East Main St in Franklin (next to the new bridge).

Series of Dementia Workshops Coming in March and April

A campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia is underway in Macon County with the support of area churches, the Southwestern Commission Area Agency on Aging, Macon County Public Library, Angel Medical, Macon County Senior Services, and Macon County DSS.

Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church has partnered with a growing list of area churches throughout Macon County to host a workshop series, ‘Dementia Friends NC’ beginning on Tuesdays, March 20, 2018. Designed to help build awareness about dementia and identify ways local citizens can help people who are living with it in our community, the four-session workshop series is being made possible through a Missional Engagement Team Grant of the Smoky Mountain District of The United Methodist Church.

The 90-minute sessions will take place on four consecutive Tuesdays, beginning March 20, 2018, with both afternoon and evening sessions offered, as well as choice of venue.  All 2:00 p.m. sessions will be offered at the John & Dorothy Crawford Senior Center.   All 7:00 p.m. sessions will be offered at the Macon County Public Library.


ALL WORKSHOPS WILL BE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
