Daily Weather Briefing for Saturday, November 30, 2019

Outlook

Moisture will begin to gradually move back into the region from the west today, with a cold front bringing widespread showers to our area early Sunday. In the front`s wake, colder air and gusty winds will return late Sunday through Monday setting up favorable conditions for northwest flow snow across the higher terrain. Otherwise, conditions should be generally cool and dry under the influence of high pressure.

The 2019 Hurricane Season Ends Today

The timelapse above shows the 2019 Hurricane Season in the North Atlantic Basin.

The season produced 18 named storms, including six hurricanes of which three were “major” (Category 3, 4 or 5). NOAA’s outlook called for 10-17 named storms, 5-9 hurricanes and 2-4 major hurricanes, and accurately predicted the overall activity of the season.

“During each and every hurricane season, thousands of workers across the federal government coordinate with NOAA to safeguard Americans against the threat posed by hurricanes,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “From advanced warnings to business aid, the Department of Commerce stands ready to help Americans from a storm’s formation to long after its dissipation.”

This year marks the fourth consecutive above-normal Atlantic hurricane season. The only other period on record that produced four consecutive above-normal seasons was 1998-2001. Also this year, five tropical cyclones formed in the Gulf of Mexico, which ties a record with 2003 and 1957 for the most storms to form in that region. Of those, three — Barry, Imelda, and Nestor — made landfall in the U.S.

**note** Today marks the last day Macon Media publishes daily updates on tropical activity. Should conditions change, the tropical section will be added back to the daily weather briefing.

Weather Hazards

Hazardous weather is not expected today. Rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday and snow showers are possible on Monday.
Wind chill values on the Highlands Plateau will drop into the teens overnight Sunday into early Monday morning.

NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook

A strong low-pressure system will pass to our north and move a robust cold front through the area on Sunday. In the front`s wake, colder air will return late Sunday into Monday setting up favorable conditions for accumulating northwest flow snow and slippery road conditions across the higher terrain. In addition, gusty winds are also likely from Sunday morning through early Tuesday.

**Note** A Tropical Weather Outlook section has been added to the daily weather briefing for the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and since those tend to run long when there is activity, that section has been added between the daily forecasts for the four regions of the county and the almanac section so people can get to their daily forecasts with minimal interference.

Daily Weather Briefing for Thanksgiving Day, 2019

Happy Thanksgiving!

Macon Media is thankful for every one of you who offer prayers and support for people who are involved in accidents, fires, and other incidents that require the response of public safety personnel. If you've given to a benefit to help any of these victims, thank you! Macon Media is also thankful for the paid and volunteer firefighters, EMS Workers, and Law Enforcement Officers who spend many hours a year helping our fellow citizens.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Macon Media this year and in years past. You have helped (and are helping) more than you can know.

Bobby Coggins
Publisher, MaconMedia.com

Here is a Thanksgiving Proclamation by President George Washington:

Thanksgiving Proclamation
[New York, 3 October 1789]
By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

George Washington

Outlook

A cold front will cross the county today, bringing rain with it. Fair and quiet conditions return for Thanksgiving Day and Friday, with another cold front expected to impact our area this weekend.

The "S" Word

Macon Media does not usually comment on weather patterns beyond three days. Some computer models are calling for snow showers in our region overnight Sunday (Dec 1st) into the day on Monday (Dec 2nd). Accumulations for most of the county are expected to be less than an inch. I (Bobby) would be surprised if any snow lays on the ground or roadways due to the relative warmth of the soil. There is potential for elevated surfaces to have an inch or so accumulate. Again, I am taking a wait and see attitude at this point, but I felt it was necessary to address the possibility so that you may make alternate plans for Monday. The good thing about this is that a portion of the event will happen in daylight hours so that we may enjoy seeing it fall.
