The Lecturer

C. Bradley Thompson is the BB&T Research Professor at Clemson University and the Executive Director of the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism. He has also been a visiting fellow at Princeton and Harvard universities and at the University of London.

Professor Thompson is the author of the prize-winning book John Adams and the Spirit of Liberty. He has also edited The Revolutionary Writings of John Adams, Antislavery Political Writings, 1833-1860: A Reader and was an associate editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment. His current book project is on “The Ideological Origins of American Constitutionalism.”

Dr. Thompson is also an occasional writer for The Times Literary Supplement of London. He has lectured around the country on education reform and the American Revolution, and his op-ed essays have appeared in scores of newspapers around the country and abroad. Dr. Thompson's lectures on the political thought of John Adams have twice appeared on C-SPAN television.

Peter Schiff Speaks for 1 Percent at Occupy Wall Street

Peter Schiff waded into the Cesspool of Socialism, aka Occupy Wall Street, to engage some of the participants in conversations where he defends capitalism and tries to point out where these people should be directing their anger.

Last week, Reason.tv followed investment guru, radio show host, and unflappable defender of capitalism Peter Schiff as he spent three hours among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park.

An unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent," Schiff argued with all comers for the better part of an afternoon.

Schiff is no ordinary observer. As the prinicipal of the financial firm Euro Pacific Capital, he's a full-fledged and unapologetic member of "the 1 Percent." As an outspoken radio show host and commentator, he not only predicted the housing crash and financial crisis, he railed bank and auto-sector bailouts as they were happening. Schiff believes that capitalism offers is the only hope for young, frustrated people to have a vibrant and prosperous future. So he went to Occupy Wall Street to engage and debate the protesters.

Touring the Occupy Wall Street scene in New York with a sign that read "I Am the 1%, Let's Talk," Schiff spent more than three hours on the scene, explaining the difference between cronyism and capitalism, bailouts and balance sheets, and more. 

"The regulation we want is the market," said Schiff. "That's what works." 

Schiff describes himself as "sympathetic" to the plight of the OWS protesters, but thinks their anger is misdirected at legitimate business interests and should be better at the White House, Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the crony capitalists they've bailed out.

Occupy Sylva Videos

On Saturday, October 15, 2011, I traveled over eastward over the mountain to Sylva, NC to cover the Occupy Sylva protest that was held in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protest in the financial district in New York City. I disagree with virtually every thing these people stand for and hearing them speak was like hearing people from a Bizarro Universe. Surely these people had not been raised to believe in the same things I had, nor read the same US Constitution that I had. I thought about taking my copy of the US Constitution out of my pocket and asking some of them to show me where there beliefs were supported in that document, but that was not why I was there. I was there simply to get these people on the record and to show what transpired at the Fountain in Sylva, NC on October, 15, 2011, so that is what I did and here are the videos I took (plus one from someone else who was an ally of the groups participating who was also there), presented without further interpretation by me:
