Several rounds of thunderstorms are expected to develop near the Ohio Valley and move southeast toward the southern Appalachians today through Saturday night. The strongest thunderstorms may organize into a line and affect the southern Appalachians and adjacent foothills on both tonight and Saturday night. Severe weather will be possible from the mountains into the foothills, with damaging wind gusts the primary threat.

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

A surface trough continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms a couple of hundred miles to the south-southeast of Bermuda. This system is expected to develop into a broad area of low pressure during the next couple of days at it moves northeastward. However, upper-level winds do not appear conducive for additional development into a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.
