Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front. Some of these storms may become severe, with the biggest threats being damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter-sized. Any storms that develop will also be capable of producing brief heavy downpours and frequent cloud- to- ground lightning. Areas across the mountains and Blue Ridge escarpment will receive quite a bit of rainfall through tonight. Flash flooding along with major stem river flooding will be possible.

451 – Battle of Avarayr between Armenian rebels and the Sasanian Empire takes place. The Sasanids defeat the Armenians militarily but guarantee them freedom to openly practice Christianity.
946 – King Edmund I of England is murdered by a thief whom he personally attacks while celebrating St Augustine's Mass Day.
