NEWS UPDATES

A teacher at East Franklin Elementary was charged with a felony for having a firearm on school grounds yesterday.

The schools sent a press release to Macon Media. The Sheriff's Office did not send one. Another outlet released the name of the person charged, but, as you can see, official press releases did not release the name and it is policy for Macon Media to not release the names of individuals charged with crimes due to the innocent until proven guilty doctrine and the do no harm doctrine. It is up to the government to prove guilt, not the court of public opinion.

PRESS RELEASE (12-12-2024)
MACON COUNTY SCHOOLS

-------------------------
On Thursday, December 12, it was reported to a school resource officer that an employee with Macon County Schools had brought a firearm to East Franklin Elementary School. An investigation was conducted by the school resource officer, and the employee was charged with:

- 1 Felony count of Weapon on Campus or Other Educational Property

After a thorough investigation, it is our belief that there was no threat to the school or any persons at any point.

Macon County Sheriff’s Office takes the safety of our children very seriously and we have a zero tolerance policy on weapons on educational property.

ADDITIONAL STATEMENT FROM THE SCHOOLS:

The Macon County School System is thankful for our partnership with the Macon County Sheriff's Office. The safety of our children and staff is our number one priority!
