Nantahala Ranger District planning a prescribed burn today
Just in case those of you in the Highlands area see some smoke today...
The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn Friday, January 26, weather permitting on the Nantahala Ranger District.
The 1762-acre burn is planned in the Round Mountain area south of Cashiers in Jackson County on the state line with South Carolina. The burn will be completed in conjunction with the Andrew Pickens Ranger District on the Sumter National Forest.
A portion of Foothills Trail from HWY 281 to HWY 107 will be closed during the burn and is expected to reopen Friday evening.
The goal of these understory burns is to reduce hazardous fuels on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve wildlife habitat.
Public and firefighter safety is the highest priority. Be aware of the potential for smoke and firefighter traffic near the burn areas. A helicopter will be used, so please do not fly your drones near the fire.
For more information on prescribed burns, please check out the National Forests in North Carolina website. [LINK]
