Here is the news and weather briefing for Macon County.

GENERAL OUTLOOK

Afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms through the beginning of the week, while the track of Tropical Cyclone Debby determines the weather for the rest of the upcoming week. Another weak cold front drops down from the Great Lakes later in the week with a lot of uncertainty as to where Debby ends up over the Carolinas.

Hazards



Isolated to scattered thunderstorms may develop over the area this afternoon and evening. The main threats from any storm that develops will be cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy downpours.

A tropical system may impact the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia early next week. The track this system takes as it moves northward will determine what impacts it may have on our area. Check hurricanes.gov for the latest updates on this system.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

Active Systems:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on recently upgraded Hurricane Debby, located over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

1. East of the Windward Islands:
A tropical wave located near the Windward Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear generally favorable for some slow development over the next week while the system moves westward at around 20 mph over the Caribbean Sea.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...low...30 percent.

Pollen levels are expected to be in the medium range (7.2 out of 12) today with Grasses, Nettle, and Chenopods being the main culprits. Tomorrow is expected to be in the medium range (7.2 out of 12.0).

Grace Johnson Art Collection Reception at the Macon County Public Library

Friday, August 16, 2024 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm in the Macon County Public Library Meeting Room - Grace Johnson Art Collection Reception & Friends of the Library Fundraiser

Grace Johnson spent much of her retirement years volunteering with the Friends of the Library—her family is exhibiting some of the art she collected throughout her career which took her to Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Grenada, Iran, as well as stateside locations. Art will be on display throughout the month of August and available for bidding to raise funds for the Friends of the Library. Refreshments will be served.

1984 – A Biman Bangladesh Airlines Fokker F27 Friendship crashes on approach to Zia International Airport, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing all 49 people on board.

1995 – Yugoslav Wars: The city of Knin, Croatia, a significant Serb stronghold, is captured by Croatian forces during Operation Storm. The date is celebrated in Croatia as Victory Day.

2003 – A car bomb explodes in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta outside the Marriott Hotel killing 12 and injuring 150.

2010 – The Copiapó mining accident occurs, trapping 33 Chilean miners approximately 2,300 ft (700 m) below the ground for 69 days.

2010 – Ten members of International Assistance Mission Nuristan Eye Camp team are killed by persons unknown in Kuran wa Munjan District of Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan.

2012 – The Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting took place in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, killing six victims; the perpetrator committed suicide after being wounded by police.

2015 – The Environmental Protection Agency at Gold King Mine waste water spill releases three million gallons of heavy metal toxin tailings and waste water into the Animas River in Colorado.

2019 – Revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir (state) occurred and the state was bifurcated into two union territories viz Jammu and Kashmir (union territory) and Ladakh.

2020 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the 'Bhoomi Pujan' or land worship ceremony in Ayodhya, laid the foundation stone of Rama Mandir in Ayodhya after Supreme Court rules verdict in favor of building the temple on the disputed land of Ayodhya; Pakistan retaliates by calling it 'Black Day'.
