News and Weather Briefing for Saturday, December 19, 2020

OUTLOOK

Cool and dry high pressure over the region today will move off the East Coast tonight. A weather system will bring moisture back across the area from the west tonight through Sunday, with moisture lingering into Sunday night. A swiftly moving clipper system will then bring scattered snow showers to the northern mountains Monday night before dry high pressure returns through mid week. A strong cold front will approach the region with abundant moisture on Thursday before the front moves off the eastern seaboard on Christmas Day. Some of the coldest air of the season will arrive behind the front.

HAZARDS

Hazardous weather is not anticipated for today in Macon County.

A minor wintry weather event is expected for parts of the region early tomorrow morning. Precipitation could begin early Sunday morning as a wintry mix across the mountains. Although brief, any freezing rain or snow in the pre-dawn hours could lead to slippery roadways in some mountain locations until temperatures warm above freezing later Sunday morning.

Another potential winter weather event could occur on Christmas Eve that may give us a the best shot for a White Christmas in years. More on that in the next few days as computer models come into alignment as to timing and the amount of snow. After Christmas, there will be very cold air moving into the region with wind chills potentially dipping below zero next weekend.
