GENERAL OUTLOOK
Hot and humid weather will continue across the region through today. A cold front will approach the region late tonight and is expected to move across the region from the northwest on Tuesday, possibly bringing a risk of severe weather. Behind the front, high pressure will build in Wednesday with milder temperatures and less humid air, which should persist through the rest of the week. A slow warming trend is expected next weekend, but rainfall looks sparse.

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

1. Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
An area of low pressure is forecast to develop in a few days over the far eastern Atlantic between the Cabo Verde Islands and the west coast of Africa. Some slow development of this system is possible late this week as it moves slowly west-northwestward or northwestward across the eastern Atlantic.

* Formation chance through 7 days...low...20 percent.
2. Central Tropical Atlantic:
Another area of low pressure could develop by the middle to latter portion of this week over the east-central tropical Atlantic several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Some slow development of this system is also possible as it moves west-northwestward over the central tropical Atlantic.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.
