GENERAL OUTLOOK

A stationary front stalls across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia to produce heavy rainfall from showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday. Tropical Storm Idalia is forecast to strengthen as it moves northward Tuesday and becomes a hurricane before making landfall in northern Florida on Wednesday. All interests should pay close attention to the forecast early this week for the latest on the tropical system.





Most of the public schools start back today in Macon County, so give yourself a little extra time in going to and from work this morning and afternoon and be careful in allowing a little extra stopping distance between you and the school buses. Also, keep an eye out for little ones that may dart in front of your car at school bus stops.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected today and Tuesday. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing frequent lightning, gusty winds, and torrential rainfall. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible mainly today, with damaging wind gusts the primary threat. Heavy rainfall may accumulate in very short periods of time, causing rapid rises on small streams and isolated flash flooding.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

Active Systems:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane Franklin, located several hundred miles southwest of Bermuda, and on Tropical Storm Idalia, located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

1. Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave is forecast to move off the west coast of Africa in the next day or so. Environmental conditions appear marginally favorable for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form later this week while the system moves westward or west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...medium...40 percent.
