News and Weather Briefing for Friday, August 7, 2020

OUTLOOK

Passing upper-level disturbances will help generate showers and thunderstorms again today. A return to more typical isolated to scattered summertime thunderstorm activity is expected over the weekend as modest drying arrives from the west. Deeper moisture will gradually return early next week and support a more active pattern for the rest of the week.

The Starlink 10 Mission successfully launched this morning and deployed 57 Starlink satellites plus two satellites, BlackSky Global 7 and 8, the 5th and 6th BlackSky Global satellites, which were flown as rideshare payloads. All of the Starlink satellites are outfitted with the sunshade visor that was tested on a single satellite on June 4, 2020 launch.

Starlink is a satellite constellation being constructed by SpaceX to provide satellite Internet access. The constellation will consist of thousands of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit, working in combination with ground transceivers. SpaceX also plans to sell some of the satellites for military, scientific, or exploratory purposes. The SpaceX satellite development facility in Redmond, Washington houses the Starlink research, development, manufacturing, and on-orbit control operations. The total cost of the decade-long project to design, build, and deploy the constellation was estimated by SpaceX in May 2018 to be about US$10 billion. The bulk of the profits of the venture will help fund Elon Musk's plan to colonize Mars.

The Governor has issued Executive Order #155 to keep North Carolina in a Phase II Pandemic Restriction for five more weeks. You can see the news briefing where he made the announcement and read the executive order for yourself in the COVID-19 Update published by Macon Media [LINK
