Here is an abbreviated weather briefing for today through Tuesday night.

Outlook

Abundant tropical moisture flowing into the area around a deep ridge of high pressure will maintain daily precipitation chances through the early week. This high pressure will deepen toward the middle of the week, and temperatures will rise above normal, though precipitation chances will diminish a bit. The remnants of tropical cyclones Laura and Marco may bring rain to our area late in the week.

Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday Night

A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm, then a slight chance of showers between 9pm and 5am. Patchy fog after 1am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Light southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday

A slight chance of showers between 7am and noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

A chance of thunderstorms before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Hazards

An area northeast of Highlandsis under a Flood Advisory this morning. An image of the impacted area, along with the text of the advisory, is posted below.

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms producing locally heavy rain. Isolated flash flooding is possible, especially if multiple downpours or thunderstorms pass over the same area, and anywhere that soils remain soaked from heavy rain in the past couple of days. Thunderstorms will pose a risk of cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds. One or two of the storms may produce severe weather in the form of damaging winds.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
South Central Jackson County in western North Carolina...
Southeastern Macon County in western North Carolina...

* Until 615 AM EDT.

* At 308 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Highlands, Cashiers, Lake Glenville and Whiteside Mountain.

Additional rainfall of 1 inch is expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
